Position Purpose
McDowell Education Center is seeking a dependable and flexible Teaching Assistant (TA) who will also serve as a floating substitute for evening English classes in our Adult Education program. This school-year position supports adult English Language Learners (ELLs) by assisting instructors during scheduled classes and providing instructional coverage when instructors are absent. The ideal candidate enjoys working with adult learners, is adaptable, and contributes to a positive and supportive learning environment.
This position is Monday Thursday, 5:00 8:00 PM
Essential Functions
Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
  • Support English instructors during evening adult education classes
  • Work with small groups or individual students to reinforce lessons and language skills
  • Assist with classroom management and student engagement
  • Prepare and distribute instructional materials
  • Encourage and support adult learners with varying English proficiency levels
  • Assist with basic classroom technology (Chromebooks, online learning platforms, etc.)

Floating Substitute Responsibilities
  • Serve as a substitute instructor when an English teacher is absent
  • Implement provided lesson plans and instructional materials
  • Maintain a structured, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment
  • Take attendance and communicate relevant information to program staff
  • Adapt instruction as needed to support adult learners

Additional Duties

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Bilingual-Spanish/English required
Experience working in an educational setting or with adult learners preferred
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to follow lesson plans and work independently
Reliable, punctual, and flexible
Comfortable working with diverse populations and English language learners
Basic computer and technology skills
Ability to work in the United States and pass a Criminal History Background Check.
Salary and Benefits
$20 $30 per hour
An additional $1 per hour will be paid from referendum funds
