We're an IT organization, so you can use your razor-sharp IT skills to help people. There may also be occassional Trek/Wars debates, but we all know that Firefly is the only sci-fi show that counts, so it doesn't really get too out of hand.

SBTC (St. Benedict Technology Consortium, we agree with IBM that initials are easier) is a nonprofit group that supports schools, churches, and just about any other nonprofit with their IT needs. We provide regular on-site support, network management, and projects like network cabling and audiovisual installs.

The Low Voltage Installation Technician is responsible for following plans, schematics, and best practice deployment methodologies to to complete installation, repair, removal, and inspection of low voltage cabling and equipment. The desired candidate must have excellent communication skills with clients on site, be flexible in scheduling in and around active workplace needs, and be proactive in providing regular, timely communication of work status and needs to management. The position will often work as part of a 2-person crew and calls for a flexibility and willingness to perform various job duties and roles as needed.  Some mounting and work with systems related to low voltage, such as projectors, may also be involved as part of an installation job.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following;

• Identify all materials and other resources needed to complete project including tools, consumable supplies, grounding wire, Velcro, lugs, etc.
  
• Meticulously lean and maintain job site, tools, and vehicles.
  
• Works from following plans, schematics, and best practice deployment methodologies to to complete installation, repair, removal, and inspection of low voltage cabling and equipment..
• Perform inspections, testing, servicing, and installation of communications equipment, mechanical systems, and low voltage electrical cabling.
• Follow workplace safety procedures.
• Promote proactive and preventive safety activities by observing, analyzing, encouraging safe work behaviors and correcting unsafe conditions.
• Performing other duties as required by the position which may include, but are not limited to shipping and receiving materials, warehouse inventory, and preparing materials for field work.
• Daily reports, daily photos, closeout reports for each job location and additional reports as needed.

• Ability to use a multimeter, cable tester, and other tools and devices for testing purposes

• Proficiency with MS Office applications. Ability to (positively) influence others.
• Ability to work on a team.
• Passion, drive, and ability to self-start without direct supervision.
• Punctual and in regular communication about attendance

SBTC is a nonprofit.  As such, we are seeking to perform work for clients (all of whom are also nonprofits, churches, schools, and so on) as inexpensively as possible.  People who want to come in, do good work to help their communities, will do well here.  We don't pad hours.  We show up on time.  We work hard, but have fun and get satisfaction from helping our team and our community.  We take pride in that work, and also understand that many of our clients couldn't do the work if we were charging $200/hour for it.

LOCATIONS:

Collectively, SBTC serves all of Lake and Cook counties in Illinois.  The positions we're most interested in filling now are in the Northwest Suburbs (Des Plaines to Palatine, generally), the Northern Suburbs (Libertyville, Mundelein, Lake Forest, etc), and the north edge of the city (Skokie, Niles, Evanston, city north of North Ave.)  Other candidates are welcome to apply, this is where the work will likely take place though.
