We are a real estate development and property management company seeking an experienced Landlord-Tenant Paralegal to support our in-house legal and compliance function across our residential portfolio in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. This role works closely with property managers and outside counsel to manage the legal and collections process from notice through judgment, while using our proprietary software to manage the case load. The ideal candidate has experience with DC Superior Court's Landlord and Tenant Branch, is comfortable managing a high volume of matters across multiple properties and understands the procedural steps specific to DC housing law.
Key ResponsibilitiesDraft, issue, and serve notices to quit, notices to cure or vacate, and other pre-litigation notices using out proprietary software and in compliance with DC Code and DC Municipal Regulations
Track notice periods, case deadlines, court dates, and statute of limitations across the portfolio using our case management system
Coordinate service of process and confirm compliance with DC-specific service requirements
Communicate with process servers, attorney's, and the DC government agencies as needed
Prepare exhibits, ledgers, and documentation packages for hearings, mediations, and trials
Monitor portfolio-wide compliance with DC's rent control regulations, requirements, and legislative updates
Monitor tenant files, correspondence logs, and notice/filing records for each property
Serve as a liaison between property managers, regional managers, tenants, and outside counsel on legal and compliance matters
Support hearing preparation, including scheduling, witness/property manager coordination
Research DC landlord-tenant statutes, regulations, and case law and translate findings into guidance for the property management team
Stay current on changes to DC housing law and help train property management staff on compliance updates
QualificationsAssociate's degree or paralegal certificate required; Bachelor's degree preferred
2+ years of paralegal experience in landlord-tenant, real estate, or housing law (DC experience strongly preferred)
Working knowledge of DC Superior Court Landlord and Tenant Branch procedures and local rules
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a high-volume caseload with competing deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
