Position Summary
The Middle School Math Faculty Member is responsible for the educational experience and oversight of students ranging from grades six through eight. MS Math Teachers at WT utilize the Big Ideas and Math Medic curriculums. The Middle School Math teacher must understand and respond to the unique needs of adolescents, fostering in each student a sense of confidence, ethics, responsibility and respect for others. The individual in this position teaches and serves in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.
The Middle School Math Faculty Member performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the daily supervision of the Middle School Director. This person will handle most duties and responsibilities independently, though in accordance with established procedures and policies, and collaborates regularly with the middle school math faculty, math department chair, and others.
All WT employees are expected to model ethical and professional behavior, enforce school rules, and maintain confidentiality. In particular, the Middle School Math Faculty Member is responsible for the following tasks:
  • Teach two sections of Middle School math, or the equivalent of two sections in the event that the position requires elective courses or other non-course responsibilities
  • Be prepared to teach following a block schedule on a six-day rotation
  • Plan and execute lessons, using varied methods of instruction and assessment, that are in accord with Middle School curriculum and uphold the School's educational philosophy
  • Maintain an updated web presence through the School's website that includes the course syllabus and homework postings that are updated weekly, at a minimum
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the school's City as Our Campus initiative by actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom
  • Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators by attending all in-service days and attending after school faculty meetings on working days.
  • Create and maintain an appropriate and organized classroom environment with an emphasis on student safety and well-being
  • Work on curriculum revision and program development with other math teachers and the Middle School Division Director
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth through personal research, attending conferences and workshops, visiting other classes and/or schools, and integrating new skills, such as the use of technology, in the classroom
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth through professional development opportunities and by participating in faculty evaluation and growth processes.
  • Serve as an advisor
  • Complete student assessment reports (i.e., grades reports, interim comments, etc.) following guidelines and in accordance with deadlines established by the Middle School Director
  • Communicate regularly with parents in an effective and timely manner through a variety of means, including email, telephone, student progress reports, and parent notices
  • Assist the admission process by meeting with prospective families, attending admission events, and helping screen prospective candidates for admission
  • Fulfill duties that are connected with non-academic responsibilities, including but not limited to, taking attendance, monitoring study halls, and other assigned duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
Bachelor's degree, preferably in math or a related field, is required; a Master's degree and/or three years of experience in teaching are preferred. Experience in the independent school setting and in middle school teaching is preferred. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills are required. The successful candidate must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. The candidate must effectively interact and communicate with students, parents, other faculty members, and administrators.
