Position Description
DEFINITION:
This position is for a math/science tutor that is knowledgeable in math and science concepts and is able to facilitate tutoring in subjects such as Calculus, Chemistry, Statistics, or Physics. At CFCC, tutors facilitate student learning in individual and/or small groups as well as provide assistance to students in developing learning skills.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Receives general supervision from the Learning Lab Coordinator.
  • Does not exercise functional and technical supervision over other staff.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide subject area tutoring for math and science
  • Assist students in "learning how to learn."
  • Attend tutor training workshops.
  • Maintain accurate records including logging in and out for work shifts, payroll timesheets, and student attendance (Supplemental Instruction Leaders).

Other Important Functions:
  • Maintain communication with Learning Lab Management Staff.
  • Make appropriate student referrals to college offices, departments, or professionals when necessary.
  • Adhere to the expectations set forth on the Learning Lab Employee Agreement.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of the tutoring and learning process including alternate learning strategies

Abilities:
  • Possess excellent communication skills, especially verbal and listening skills.
  • Possess strong academic skills and ability to develop these skills in students.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    1. Making observations
    2. Reading and writing
    3. Communicating with others
    4. Operating assigned equipment
    5. Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    1. Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    2. Operating assigned equipment
    3. Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    4. Bending, stooping, climbing or lifting 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    1. Making sound decisions
    2. Responding to questions
    3. Demonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum Education/Training:
  • Grade of "B" or better in subjects tutored.
  • Recommendation from Instructor for each subject tutored or letter of recommendation from previous tutoring supervisor.

Minimum Experience:
  • Knowledge of concepts for math and science

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Preferred knowledge in upper level math and science (Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry)
