Job description

About Grace

Grace Church School is a JK–12, independent school located on two nearby campuses in downtown New York City. An Episcopal school, welcoming children of all faiths and of none, Grace believes in the inherent, precious dignity of every individual and seeks to provide an outstanding education worthy of our common humanity. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to the Episcopal values of dignity and belonging.

Grace is a school of big ideas, and our structured curriculum promotes academic excellence through a pedagogy of joy: an approach that reflects our belief that joy is the fuel of academic achievement, and that students learn best when motivated by delight, wonder, curiosity, and purpose. We work hard to nurture a culture of dignity and belonging, and we seek to foster in each student skills of intellectual excellence and habits of ethical virtue. Grounded in tradition, the school remains ever open to innovation, looking to the best research on the science of learning and the craft of teaching to advance the timeless values and aspirations of our mission. In the high school division, students are challenged to reach their full potential, ask essential questions, and wrestle with complex ideas, working to solve real-world problems, and participate in the interconnected global community.

About the Position:

The High School Division at Grace Church School seeks part-time Math & Science Center consultants.  Most tutoring takes place in person in the Math & Science Center.

Note that a “consultant” is much like a tutor but with more emphasis on encouraging the student to take the initiative in the session.  In practice, the terms “consultant” and “tutor” get used interchangeably.

The ideal Math & Science Center consultant is reliable, an exceptional listener, a clear communicator, interested in working with high school students, and embodies anti-racist ideals in practice.  Consultants must attend orientation meetings and participate in an in-house certification process with the Math & Science Center Director.

Substitute-teaching opportunities are also available.

Qualifications:

  • Tutoring or teaching experience is strongly preferred, especially experience working with high school students.
  • Working knowledge of one or more of these subjects: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II / Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Statistics / Data Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.  Experience with multiple subject areas is strongly preferred.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to antiracism and accessibility of student education for diverse learners.
  • Openness to feedback and excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to manage online information.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, Mandarin, and/or Latin is a plus and may be useful for occasional one-on-one tutoring needs for those courses.

Primary Duties:

  • Tutor students in math and/or science, primarily one-on-one and occasionally in small groups.
  • Work approximately 3–12 hours per week, not including optional substitute-teaching opportunities.
  • Apply creative and flexible approaches in response to students’ diverse learning needs.
  • Complete online summary reports regarding student progress following tutoring sessions.
  • Respond quickly to communications from the Math & Science Center Director.
  • Collaborate with fellow Math & Science Center consultants.
  • Communicate effectively with Math and Science teachers, Class Deans, and Learning Specialists when appropriate.

Hours of Operation

Monday - Friday: 8:00-8:50 am, 12:00-2:00 pm, 3:30-5:00 pm.  Additional Wednesday slot: 10-10:50am.

Please note that consultants need not be available for all sessions.  However, consultants are asked to reliably commit to a regular schedule on a semester basis.

Compensation

  • $30/hour for consultants who have not yet earned a college degree and $40/hour for consultants with a college degree.
  • Additional substitute-teaching opportunities are available, paid at $60 for each 60-minute class and $120 for each 80-minute class.

Grace Church School is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe that equity and inclusion are not only hallmarks of a just society, but also virtues essential to sound learning. Our commitment to antiracism, equity, and belonging calls on all faculty members to promote a culture of dignity and belonging for everyone at Grace by recognizing and honoring the unique gifts of its students, families, faculty, and staff. We encourage applications from candidates with broad and diverse backgrounds and from individuals of all races, nationalities, identities, and beliefs.

To apply, submit a cover letter and resume through our school website.
