Job Summary
Math Tutor
The math tutor will work with the Student Support Services (SSS) math professor to tutor TRIO students in Math 980, 1010, 1030, and 1050. The math tutor will also support the math professor by proofreading worksheets and solution keys, and facilitating group study sessions. Tutoring classes above Math 1050 are possible.
Program Overview
The TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS) at the University of Utah is an educational success program for first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities who are seeking their first bachelor's degree. The SSS Program serves qualified admitted students at the university and provides students with academic advising, tutoring, financial aid assistance, career exploration, and course offerings in math, writing, and first-year experience (tuition-free to those who qualify), as well as disburses $46,000 of scholarships to participants in the program each year. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education.

Responsibilities
* Provide tutorial services for Math 980, 1010, 1030, and 1050.
* Help the math professor proofread worksheets and solution keys.
* Facilitate group study sessions.
* Promoting program activities and events.
* Support with outreach efforts to prospective TRIO students.
* Refer students to appropriate campus resources.
* Communicate with professional staff regarding student progress.
* Promote a supportive environment for all participants and serve as a positive role model and representative of the TRIO office.
Minimum Qualifications
University of Utah student
Must have completed college algebra (Math 1050) or higher with a minimum of "B" average
Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with students from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds
Individual and group tutoring experience preferred
Be willing to commit 15 hours per week
Tutors must attend:
  • Training
  • TRIO-SSS Fall Student Welcome (September 9th)

Completed Calculus I, Math 1210.
