As a part-time math teacher, your responsibilities are to teach students key math concepts through a tutoring lesson, which may be an after-school session or in a school classroom during the day. You carry out your duties throughout the school day or after school, providing students with extra teaching and math coursework in specific areas in which they need more help. These positions can be for up to 35 hours each week, and you may travel to different schools or students’ homes. Some part-time math teaching positions are virtual tutoring jobs you can do from home by connecting to students via a webcam to conduct lessons.
| Aspect | Part Time Math Teacher | Part Time Math Tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a teaching certification or relevant degree | Usually no formal certification required, but expertise in math needed |
| Work Environment | School classrooms, educational institutions | Private sessions, online platforms, tutoring centers |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Schools, districts, educational organizations | Individual clients, tutoring companies, online platforms |
| Common Search & Comparison Intent | Looking for formal teaching roles in schools | Seeking personalized, flexible math help outside school |
Part Time Math Teachers typically work in educational institutions with formal credentials, focusing on classroom instruction. In contrast, Part Time Math Tutors often operate independently or through tutoring platforms, providing one-on-one or small group sessions without necessarily requiring formal teaching credentials. Both roles aim to improve students' math skills but differ mainly in work setting and certification requirements.

Do you enjoy helping others learn? Would you like experience working with faculty inside of the classroom? If yes, please apply to join the Learning Assistant Program. Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses. LAs are embedded in 'gateway' courses that are critical for students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class activities.
LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning services including tutoring, coaching, and more.
Available courses change every semester. In Spring 2026 there may be availability in: ECON, MATH, WRTG, BIOL, PSY, and more.
Learning Assistants facilitate discussions, group work and in-class activities among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement. This position works hand-in-hand with faculty in order to help fellow students succeed in specific courses. Learning Assistants must attend an orientation and participate in ongoing training with their fellow Learning Assistants. In addition to in-class time, Learning Assistants may also support students in their LA course outside of class time with additional duties such as holding exam study sessions, office hours and more.

• Be reliable, dependable, committed, and able to attend and participate in all shifts, meetings, and trainings
• Have the ability to effectively communicate and work well with students, peers, staff, and faculty
• Be willing to learn, give and receive feedback, and have a growth mindset
• Be eager to support their peers and help them learn without simply providing answers

As a Learning Assistant you will:
• Attend and participate in the course classes and/or labs where you are assigned
• Attend and participate in required Learning Commons orientation, trainings and meetings
• Meet with Lead Faculty and LAs from the same course
• Perform other duties as assigned by the LA Program Director or Lead Faculty
Some experience tutoring, coaching, teaching, mentoring or working well with others is preferred. Typically, a successful LA has previously passed the course or taken similar courses to the one they are an LA for.
