Currently, we have 2 part-time openings for 3.75-hour, 9.5-month employees at various school sites. The work hours for this position vary by site, Monday through Friday.
BASIC FUNCTION
Under general supervision of the principal or designee, perform a variety of bilingual/bicultural instructional activities; support and help English Learner (EL) students improve their English skills; assist EL students with cultural acclimation; work focuses on academic as well as social-emotional growth of the student; perform a variety of supportive tasks and follow-up activities; serve as an interpreter for community members with a limited English speaking ability; other related work as required.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience working with various age groups of children experiencing language deficiencies and remedial instruction needs is preferred.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, with coursework or training in child growth and development and bilingual/bicultural instructional processes.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Assist instructional personnel with students experiencing bilingual/bicultural instructional needs
• Assist classroom students and small group settings, focusing on language and social-emotional growth
• Serve as a translator and interpreter to facilitate communication with non-English speaking members of family and school community
• Work in various instructional settings, including individual tutoring and small groups of students
• Provide support to reinforce and follow up language development and learning activities
• Manage student behavior through a variety of strategies and techniques, promoting positive social behaviors
• Assist students who do not speak English to become independent in classes
• Develop and assist in development of specialized instructional materials
• Assist in development and maintenance of related student records and files
• Administer and score criterion-referenced tests, state, and district-mandated language proficiency tests, and general aptitude tests
• Requisition, store, distribute and maintain an inventory of bilingual/bicultural educational materials, supplies, and equipment
• Assist in development and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to special instructional and language requirements of students
• Use a second language and provide cultural experiences for students with bilingual/bicultural needs
• Perform language census testing and records results
• Participate in professional development opportunities offered by department, school site, and District that are held during employee's work hours and work year
• May participate in professional development opportunities outside employee's work hours and work year
• May assist in translation of quizzes, tests, and school-to-home flyers
• May assist with translations in parent conferences
• Performs related duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Supplemental Information
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform light work, which involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations - Section 404.1567 "Physical Exertion Requirements")
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects of this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

• Function effectively in classroom and outside play environments, engaged in work of a moderately active nature
• Stand and walk for extended periods of time (greater than one hour)
• Bend down at child's level to assist with changing clothes when needed
• Sit on the floor and assist children during rest time. Requires ability to grasp, reach, push, pull, and move lightweight teaching aids and supplies
• Sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to use a personal computer keyboard, multimedia, and other office equipment
• Engage in playful activities with children (pushing on swings, assisting children while learning or riding tricycles)
• Sufficient hearing and speaking skills to project voice and communicate with staff and children in classroom settings and in one-on-one conversations
• Visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, observe children perform assignments, and observe moving objects and events
• This job involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods.

Employees working less than full-time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. Fingerprinting:Employees will be charged for processing their fingerprints at the time they are hired. The fingerprints are used to complete a confidential background investigation. Physical Examination: Newly hired employees must pass a qualifying Medical examination given by a District-appointed physician, which includes testing for illegal controlled substances.
