What is a part time live in nanny?

Part time live-in nannies are childcare professionals who reside in their employer's home but work a set number of hours per week, rather than full-time. They typically provide care for children during scheduled hours, and may assist with tasks such as preparing meals, helping with homework, and engaging children in activities. Outside of their working hours, they often have free time to pursue their own interests, but remain available for emergencies. Families may choose a part time live-in nanny for greater flexibility and reliable childcare support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time live in nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Live In Nanny, you generally need experience in childcare, a high school diploma or equivalent, and often CPR and first aid certification. Familiarity with household management tools, scheduling apps, and sometimes early childhood development resources is beneficial. Patience, reliability, flexibility, and strong communication skills help build trust and positive relationships with both children and parents. These skills are crucial for ensuring children's safety, supporting their development, and maintaining a harmonious household environment.

What are some common challenges faced by part time live in nannies, and how can they be managed effectively?

Part time live-in nannies often face the challenge of maintaining clear boundaries between work and personal time, since they reside in their employer's home. It's important to establish a clear schedule and communicate regularly with the family to ensure expectations are understood. Another common challenge is adapting to each family's unique routines and parenting styles, which can be managed by being flexible and open to feedback. Building strong, respectful relationships with both the children and parents can help create a positive and supportive work environment.

Job description

Start Date: ASAP
Location: Saddle River, NJ
Compensation: $30–$35 per hour
Commitment Level: Part-time, live-out, long-term
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3:00 PM–8:00 PM (weekly schedule provided one week in advance)
Guaranteed Hours: 25 hours per week

Overview
A family in Saddle River is seeking an experienced, reliable part-time Nanny on a long-term basis. There are three children — ages 9, 11, and 14 — all in school and all active in sports, so this afternoon role centers on after-school care, driving, meal preparation, and homework support. Education is a priority in this household, and the family wants someone who will genuinely engage with the children's schoolwork and help them build independence.

A typical afternoon includes pickup, snacks, homework, driving to and from practices, cooking dinner, and managing the evening until the parent is home. This position works alongside the family's live-in nanny, so a collaborative approach is essential. A vehicle is provided for work-related driving and parking is available at the residence. The home has a pool. The schedule stays consistent year-round, including during summer camp.

Benefits
Guaranteed 25 hours per week, one week paid vacation, two paid sick days, two paid personal days, paid holidays (Christmas, New Year's, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving), family vehicle provided for work-related driving, parking available at the residence, weekly schedule provided one week in advance

  • Prepare afternoon snacks and cook family dinners
  • Assist with homework and support school assignments across elementary, middle, and high school levels
  • Encourage independence, routine, and age-appropriate responsibility
  • Manage grocery needs related to meal preparation and clean up kitchen and dining areas following meals
  • Children's laundry, including washing, folding, and putting away
  • Light tidying of children's bedrooms, play areas, and common spaces used during the shift
  • Maintain organization of school supplies, sports equipment, and activity gear
  • Track the children's activity, school, and appointment calendars and communicate schedule changes clearly
  • Coordinate and share responsibilities with the family's live-in nanny
  • Supervise the children safely around the pool

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of professional nanny experience with school-age children
  • Valid driver's license and confident, comfortable driving daily; the majority of this role involves driving
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Able to swim and comfortable swimming with the children
  • Strong cooking skills and comfort preparing family meals from scratch
  • Experience supporting homework for elementary through high school-age children
  • Highly organized with strong scheduling and time-management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working alongside other household staff
  • Positive, upbeat, and able to work well with a family that values achievement, goal-setting, and independence
