Job description

Job Title:                    Lifeguard                               Pay per hour:            $18.00
Department:             Programming                       Classification:           Regular, part-time
Reporting:                 Unit Director                        Office Hours:   Mon-Fri. 3:30-7:30 pm
Location:                   Clubhouse                             FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly            
            Summary:The purpose of the Swimming Pool program is to provide social developmental services for Boys & Girls Club members.  This is accomplished through the implementation of a weekly program plan that includes individual and group swim lessons, tournament and contests, group clubs and lifesaving training. The pool program promotes individual and group water safety skills, health/fitness and opportunity for leadership development. Informal mentoring, both individually and in groups, occurs daily in the swimming pool.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Program Related – In order to provide a quality experience for Boys & Girls Club members, the Cadet Instructor conducts tournaments or contests daily.
  • Build positive and appropriate relationships with members.
  • Always enforce member expectations.
  • Maintain a program that is safe, positive, and encourages youth development through quality experiences and high standards of achievement.
  • Promote the development of social and emotional skills.
  • Manage classroom conduct and exhibit problem-solving skills needed to redirect behavior.
  • Maintain daily and monthly attendance records during programming.
  • Swim lessons for shallow water and deep-water swimmers.
  • Supervised free swim periods.
  • Tournaments and contests daily.
  • Low-organized group games daily.
  • Group club or team to meet once each week.
  • Lifesaving/safety course – one course per year.
  • Maintain constant safe supervision when pool is open and follow the swimming pool guidelines for safe operation.
  • Follow written pool maintenance procedures in cooperation with Manager of Operations.
  • Clean and hose deck area daily.
  • Always secure the pool area is locked.
  • Maintain attractive up-to-date bulletin boards and displays, including weekly program display and members-of-the-month.
  • Organize and keep clean pool storage area and filter room area.
  • Maintain equipment and make minor repairs as needed.

The above program activities should reflect specific age groups and boy/girl/coed opportunities.
Non-Program Related – In addition to program duties, Lifeguards are expected to:
 
  • Demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm towards Club members, parents and visitors; always offer exceptional customer service experience.
  • Maintain equipment and make minor repairs as needed.
  • Model and encourage positive behavior and interactions between members.

 Qualifications and Experience:
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a high school diploma.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a car to drive to and from work.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform the required duties.
  • Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted to perform required duties.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Must pass an FBI/BCI background check.
  • Ability to work in a Club environment with possible extended  periods of movement and engagement with members and staff.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
