Description
The City of Geneva is seeking a part-time Fire Inspector who is passionate about public safety and fire prevention to join our team at the Fire Department. Reporting to the Fire Marshal, this position is responsible for conducting fire safety inspections and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal fire codes throughout the City. The Fire Inspector will work closely with property owners, businesses, and government agencies to promote fire safety and prevent potential fire hazards. Additionally, the Fire Inspector will assist with annual life safety fire inspections, plan reviews, new construction inspections, and special events.
Examples of Duties
Regular duties include but are not limited to:
  • Preserve and improve fire safety at all non-residential properties by performing annual fire safety inspections. Conduct regularly reoccurring inspections of commercial and multi-unit residential structures to detect any fire and life safety hazards, recommend proper corrective action, and cites any code or ordinance violations as necessary.
  • Assist in evaluating the level of fire and non-fire risk in the community and provide results to the Fire Marshal by using the department RMS to develop the data necessary to form operational recommendations / decisions.
  • Ensure preplan information collected during all inspections is accurately updated in the RMS database. From time-to-time provide updates to the Fire Department on preplan changes. Confirm all preplan updates are forwarded to Tri-Com Central Dispatch for their pre-planning records.
  • Assist the Fire Marshal as a backup to perform occupancy inspections associated with building permit inspections, new business inspections, and special events.
  • Assist as a backup in reviewing plans or drawings for construction involving proposed developments, multi-family residential, commercial, industrial, or institutional buildings. May include development, civil engineering review, building construction plans, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, hood suppression, and special systems plans.
  • Support life safety education as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess the following, or have a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job:
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED;
  • One to three years of demonstrated inspection/plan review experience; or,

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license
  • If not obtained at time of hire, incumbents shall have six-months to obtain one of the following certifications: Fire Inspector I or Fire Prevention Officer (OSFM) or Fire Inspector I (NFPA) or Fire Inspector I (ICC)

Supplemental Information
This is a part-time position that is anticipated to work an average of 18 hours per week. Shifts will primarily be Monday to Friday during regular business hours to meet the needs of property owners. There is some flexibility in scheduling, however, it is desired the incumbent's schedule will be consistent on a weekly basis once set.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
