Job description

This posting is for a part-time, casual/seasonal School Bus Driver position with the Caesar Rodney School District. 

Part-time School Bus Drivers work up to 29 or fewer hours per week. Hours may vary based on operational needs and are not guaranteed.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To ensure the safe transportation of students to and from school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Safely transports students to and from school, field trips, and extracurricular activities along designated routes in accordance with time schedules, loading and unloading students at designated locations.
  • Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is clean, safe, and in proper working condition.
  • Refuels and cleans the bus as needed.
  • Ensure that a communication device functions properly before each trip.
  • Reports all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents, promptly.
  • Maintains order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with district policies and procedures; reports any incidents involving student discipline.
  • Observes and tracks route timing, such as total time en route, time between stops, loading/unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency, as requested.
  • Maintains accurate logs, reports, and other documentation as required.
  • Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed the bus at the end of all bus routes.
  • Conducts inventory of emergency and first-aid supplies; reports deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Prepares students and aides for emergency bus drills and ensures drills are conducted as required.
  • Responds appropriately to accidents and emergencies by evacuating students according to established, written, and practiced procedures; ensures that medical emergency protocols are followed; and completes incident reports as required.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

EQUIPMENT:
Standard school bus and automotive equipment, including communication devices such as mobile radios or phones.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Travel between district schools and various off-site activity/event locations is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:







  • Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License.
  • Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL)- Class B with Passenger, Air Brakes and School Bus endorsements.

Note: Applicants currently in the process of obtaining a CDL are encouraged to apply.

  • Working knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.
  • Physical ability to move within the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the community


SALARY: In accordance with the State of Delaware and local salary schedules, based on experience. 


PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Individuals must provide official high school transcripts, if applicable, updated resume, and three (3) letters of recommendation.
  • All persons employed by the Caesar Rodney School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following:  proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver's License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
  • Transportation employees are subject to a pre-employment drug test and physical (initially and annually).
