What is a part time kids art job?

Part-time kids art jobs involve teaching or facilitating art activities for children on a flexible or reduced-hour schedule. These roles can include positions such as art instructors, after-school program leaders, camp counselors, or assistants in art studios. Individuals in these jobs help children explore creativity, learn artistic techniques, and develop confidence through various art projects. Part-time schedules are ideal for those seeking work-life balance, students, or individuals looking to gain experience in art education. These jobs can be found in schools, community centers, museums, or private studios.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time kids art instructor?

To thrive as a Part-Time Kids Art Instructor, you typically need a background in art or art education, experience working with children, and a creative portfolio. Familiarity with basic art supplies, classroom management tools, and sometimes child safety certifications are also valuable. Patience, enthusiasm, and strong communication skills help engage young learners and create a positive classroom environment. These skills ensure effective teaching, foster creativity, and support a safe and enjoyable learning experience for children.

What are some common challenges faced by part time kids art instructors, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time kids' art instructors often encounter challenges such as managing varying skill levels within a single class and maintaining engagement among young students. To address these, it's helpful to design flexible lesson plans that allow for creative expression at different abilities, and to incorporate interactive, hands-on activities that keep students interested. Building strong communication with parents and collaborating with fellow instructors can also provide valuable support and insight. Being adaptable and enthusiastic helps create a positive learning environment for both the children and the instructor.

Job description

Kids Art Teacher (Pre-K–5) (Part-Time)

One River School of Art + Design
$25–$35 per hour

Teach Big Ideas to Small Humans.

At One River School, we believe children are capable of real artistic thinking. We’re looking for practicing artists and passionate educators who want to introduce young creators (PreK–2) to contemporary art in ways that feel exciting, meaningful, and wildly engaging.

If you love the energy of a studio, believe process matters as much as product, and want to help kids see themselves as artists from day one—this could be your space.

What You’ll Do

Lead dynamic, hands-on weekly art classes for PreK–5 students - Classes run weekday and Saturday mornings and afternoons.
Explore contemporary approaches across painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, mixed media, and 3D work
Encourage experimentation, creative risk-taking, and big imaginative thinking
Create “WOW moments” that build confidence and artistic voice
Connect thoughtfully with families about student growth and creative breakthroughs

This isn’t craft-time. It’s real art—made accessible, joyful, and inspiring.

Why Artists Thrive at One River

Studio Energy
Teach in a beautiful, contemporary space with an in-house gallery showcasing student work and emerging artists.

Curriculum Support (No Burnout)
Our thoughtfully designed curriculum gives you structure and inspiration—without endless prep.

Fully Equipped Classrooms
All materials, tools, and supplies are provided so you can focus on teaching and creating.

Creative Community
Work alongside fellow artists and educators who care deeply about art, growth, feedback, and inclusion.

Flexible Schedule for Creative Lives
Evenings and weekends (Saturday/Sunday). Later start times leave your mornings open for studio practice or other creative pursuits.

Room to Grow
We’re a growing organization committed to promoting from within and building long-term careers in art education.

Who You Are

A practicing or highly engaged artist with at least 1 year of teaching experience
Confident working across multiple mediums
Energized by working with children and nurturing their creative confidence
Warm, engaging, and student-centered
A thoughtful communicator who values relationships with families and colleagues
Aligned with our mission to transform art education

Education:
BFA or BS in Art Education required
