DEFINITION
Are you looking to join a great time in a part-time position with flexible hours? Come join the Redondo Beach Library as a part-time Library Clerk!

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of highly specialized library clerical duties requiring independent judgment and functional expertise in library operations and performs other related duties as required.
This part-time position is at-will and not eligible for City benefits. The hiring department will contact candidates directly. Not all candidates will be contacted. Due to the volume of applications received, status updates are not provided after application submission.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
This position is accountable as a team member to perform the more varied and complex sub professional library work in the Main City Library, and its branch office North Library including but not limited to:
  • Charging and discharging books and audiovisual material
  • Performing circulation and service desk duties using the automated system to check out and check in library materials
  • Collecting fines and fees
  • Receiving, refunding, and reconciling cash
  • Registering borrowers
  • Entering or modifying data to ensure accurate information regarding patron information, fines and fees, and library materials
  • Interpreting and resolving questions regarding library circulation policies
  • Resolving problems for customers related to Library services by researching records, providing information and taking appropriate action to correct errors or facilitate services
  • Assisting in training of new employees
  • Answering the telephone and takes messages
  • Using book bins, book trucks, paper cutters, staplers and similar equipment
  • Preparing books and library materials for circulation
  • Operating a motor vehicle for delivery of transit library material
  • Assisting in maintaining a neat and orderly workplace
  • Accurately entering data into library information files and the automated library system
  • Exercising independent judgment and tact in the applications of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Keeping accurate records and statistics
  • Attending staff meetings
  • Communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with the public and fellow employees
  • Working irregular hours including evening nights, weekend and holidays (when necessary); being available for automatic return to work with a reasonable response time during off-duty hours for major emergencies, disasters, critical incidents
  • Delivering outstanding internal and external customer service; communicating effectively orally and in writing with the public and fellow employees; solving problems and supporting the City's mission, policies, goals and objectives
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and working cooperatively with co-workers, other members of the supervisory/management team, City staff, other agencies, and the community
  • Providing initiative in achieving positive and timely results for the organization

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The position requires:
  • Irregular scheduling including evening and weekend hours and travel between city libraries
  • Knowledge of standard library practices and techniques including the use of the Dewey decimal system
  • Customer relations and public relations techniques, including phone etiquette
  • The ability to complete work with minimal supervision and instruction
  • Understand and follow complex written and oral instruction
  • Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
    The ability to communicate using email programs
  • An understanding and adherence to City policies for information technology
  • One year of paid library clerical experience performing routine and customer service duties
    • Or any combination of training and/or experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities
    • Or six months paid experience performing routine clerical or page duties with the City of Redondo Beach Public Library System
    • Or completion of 12 college units in library science or a library technician program (proof required)

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
CLASSIFICATION: This is an at-will, non-exempt, seasonal part-time position that is not eligible for City benefits.
SELECTION PROCESS:
