Part-Time Invertebrate Keeper Job Description

Wage: $15/hour

Shift: Part time. Maximum of 29 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs day-to-day care (diet prep, cleaning terrariums, replacing substrate, sanitation of deceased animals, maintaining a clean husbandry lab, record keeping etc) required for invertebrates, animals, enclosures, exhibits, shipments, and containment areas.

  • Provides guidance, training, inspiration and a welcoming atmosphere for guests, volunteers, interns, and coworkers.

  • Facilitates and participates in guest interactions through daily keeper talks, lab tours, and special events.

  • Ensures that the operations of the entomology lab and exhibits run efficiently, USDA/APHIS regulations and other standard operating procedures are followed.

  • Maintains a good show in the butterfly conservatory, lab space, exhibits, and receiving areas.

  • Collaborates with Managers to handle assigned Point Taxa, including conducting research, trialing new husbandry techniques, and strengthening the Biosphere's capacity to become a world-class, zoo-based, conservation organization.

  • Assists with all record keeping (censusing of animals, recording feeding, births, deaths, etc.).

  • Collects substrates and browse from outside sources.

  • Exemplify Thanksgiving Point’s Mission, Values and Policies.

  • Other duties as assigned by manager/supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Strong collaboration skills and works successfully as part of a team.

  • Adept at both verbal and written communication.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised.

  • Willing to enthusiastically interact with guests of all ages.

  • Physical mobility including lifting 50 pounds, standing for long periods of time, bending and reaching, and working in hot and humid environments.

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, or related field is preferred, and a desire to learn about entomology and invert husbandry.

  • Preference for a year's experience caring for animals, preferably invertebrates, in a professional setting.

  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and standard business software, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Be at least 16 years old.

  • Must pass a background check.
