Job description

Position Summary

SALAM Islamic Center is seeking a dependable and experienced Maintenance Coordinator to oversee the general maintenance, safety, and upkeep of its sites. This position combines hands-on maintenance work with the coordination of vendors, contractors, inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance.

The ideal candidate is organized, responsive, trustworthy, and able to prioritize facility needs within a part-time schedule while keeping leadership informed of urgent matters, ongoing work, and anticipated expenses.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of SALAM's sites and identify maintenance, repair, safety, and cleanliness concerns.
  • Complete basic repairs, including minor plumbing, electrical work, painting, furniture assembly, hardware replacement, and general facility upkeep.
  • Maintain and regularly update a list of open work orders, priorities, and completed projects.
  • Coordinate qualified vendors and contractors for work requiring specialized expertise or licensing.
  • Obtain estimates and approval before beginning significant repairs or making purchases.
  • Monitor heating and air-conditioning systems and coordinate service when needed.
  • Support fire, building, security, and other required inspections.
  • Regularly check doors, locks, lighting, restrooms, parking areas, landscaping, and other facility systems.
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance issues and communicate safety or operational concerns to leadership.
  • Maintain SALAM's tools, equipment, supplies, warranties, manuals, and maintenance records.
  • Submit receipts, invoices, and supporting documentation for approved purchases.
  • Provide regular written updates on completed work, outstanding needs, vendor activity, and recommended next steps.
  • Assist with facility setup and support for major programs or events when needed.
  • Coordinate with SALAM staff to minimize disruption to prayers, school activities, tenants, programs, and community events.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in facility maintenance, property management, construction, or a related field.
  • Ability to complete general repairs safely and correctly.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work across sites within a limited weekly schedule.
  • Ability to work independently while following SALAM's approval and purchasing procedures.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to lift and move maintenance equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Professional and respectful when interacting with staff, community members, tenants, vendors, and volunteers.
  • Availability to respond to occasional urgent issues outside regular working hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining nonprofit, religious, educational, or community facilities.
  • Familiarity with basic HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, and building systems.
  • Established relationships with qualified local vendors and contractors.
  • Knowledge of workplace and building safety requirements.

Schedule & Hours
Part-time position averaging approximately 16 hours per week. Hours may vary based on facility needs, with occasional evening or weekend availability.
