Job description

Job Title: Structural Engineer (Marine Foundation Specialist)

Location: South Florida (Projects primarily in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties)

Job Type: Full-time or Part-Time

Experience Level: Mid to Senior Level

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Structural Engineer to lead our marine engineering division. The ideal candidate will have specialized expertise in the design and analysis of marine foundations, specifically seawalls, docks, and deep foundation systems. You will play a critical role in ensuring our structures withstand the unique environmental challenges of the South Florida coastline—including storm surge and saltwater corrosion—while adhering to strict local regulations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design & Analysis:

  • Perform structural design and analysis for marine structures including:

    • Seawalls:  Steel, Vinyl, composite, and concrete seawall systems with reinforced concrete caps and tie-back systems.

    • Docks & Piers: Timber, composite, and concrete marginal docks and finger piers.

    • Foundations: Prestressed concrete piles (square and round), auger cast piles, and steel sheet pile retaining walls.

  • Conduct complex load calculations (dead, live, wind, hydrostatic, and wave loads) to ensure structural integrity and stability.

  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations using AutoCAD and structural analysis software.

2. Regulatory Compliance:

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of the Florida Building Code (FBC) (current edition) to all designs.

  • Navigate the specific permitting requirements of South Florida counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe) and local municipalities.

  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies such as DERM (Miami-Dade), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for permitting approvals.

3. Project Management & Site Work:

  • Conduct site visits to assess existing marine structures (seawall inspections) and determine repair or replacement strategies.

  • Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to interpret soil reports and determine pile capacities and embedment depths.

  • Oversee construction administration, including reviewing shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and conducting threshold/special inspections during pile driving and concrete placement.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Florida is required.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in structural engineering with a heavy focus on marine construction.

    • Proven experience designing concrete piles and steel sheet piling.

    • Familiarity with corrosion protection strategies for aggressive marine environments.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, RISA-3D (or similar FEM software), and deep foundation design software.

    • Strong understanding of coastal processes, wave mechanics, and soil-structure interaction.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with "Batters Piles" and batter angles for lateral stability.

  • Knowledge of High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) requirements.

  • Existing relationships with local building officials or environmental regulators in South Florida.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive Salary & Benefits: 401(k), Bonus Structure.

  • Regional Impact: Work on high-profile waterfront properties that define the South Florida coastline.

  • Professional Growth: Opportunities for continuing education and specialized certifications in coastal engineering.
