Job description

Position Title
SANE Nurse - Emergency Department - PRNGreat Bend HospitalPosition Summary / Career Interest:Under the supervision of the nursing department's management, the RN assumes the responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed to deliver safe, evidence based care within their scope of practice to sexual assault victims.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Collects andassessesinitial and on-going data about the health status of the patient.
  • Completes skilled forensic evidence collection and full body assessments including detailed genital examinations by photographing injuries and collecting forensic specimens.
  • Provides expert testimony.
  • Initiates and/or revises an individualized plan of care that includes immediate and long-term outcomes for the patient/family and reflects the plan of the entire health care team.
  • Carries out interventions safely and in compliance with policy to facilitate achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Evaluates patient response to intervention/therapy based upon expected outcomes.
  • Provides patient education by explaining procedures, medications and giving instructions at a level the patient can understand including referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up; addresses patient's questions and concerns; verifies patient informed consent when indicated.
  • Documents and communicates all required components of patient care.
  • Participates in the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree Nursing Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; (ADN or BSN required). OR
  • Associate Degree Nursing
  • 40 hour course and preceptorship in SANE/SART.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • 64 hour adult/adolescent/pediatric class


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Multi-State - State Board of Nursing
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Adult (SANE-A) - Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification (CFNC)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days


Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention - Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)
  • Additional certification(s) may be required for certain patient care settings or populations.


Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of general nursing theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques involved in performing general nursing services and adapting or modifying standards of nursing practices for care of specific medical cases.
