Position Summary
The Part-Time Maintenance Assistant supports the safe, clean, and efficient operation of Children’s Harbor’s buildings, classrooms, equipment, playgrounds, grounds, and vehicles. This position performs routine maintenance, minor repairs, inspections, and general upkeep in accordance with applicable licensing requirements, safety standards, and Children’s Harbor policies.
Working under the direction of the Facility Technician or designated supervisor, the Maintenance Assistant helps ensure that each Children’s Harbor location remains safe, hygienic, functional, and welcoming for the children, families, employees, and communities we serve.
Employment Status and Schedule
Status: Part-Time
Schedule: Monday through Thursday
Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Travel: Regular travel between Children’s Harbor locations may be required.
The schedule may occasionally vary based on operational needs, emergencies, special projects, or inclement weather.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance of Children’s Harbor buildings, classrooms, equipment, playgrounds, grounds, and vehicles.
- Complete minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical fixtures, carpentry, painting, drywall, locks, doors, furniture, and general building systems.
- Respond to assigned maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Inspect classrooms, playgrounds, parking lots, sidewalks, entrances, and other areas for damage, hazards, or needed repairs.
- Promptly report safety concerns, property damage, or repairs requiring a licensed contractor or outside vendor.
- Help maintain clean, orderly, safe, and presentable interior and exterior spaces.
- Perform basic groundskeeping duties, including removing debris, maintaining walkways, and supporting seasonal property needs.
- Assist with moving, assembling, delivering, and installing furniture, classroom equipment, supplies, and other agency property.
- Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and other maintenance equipment.
- Assist with routine inspections and basic upkeep of agency vehicles.
- Transport equipment and supplies between Children’s Harbor locations.
- Transport employees when authorized and necessary for agency operations.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work orders, inspections, repairs, and needed supplies.
- Ensure tools, chemicals, equipment, and maintenance materials are properly secured and inaccessible to children.
- Follow all safety procedures, licensing requirements, manufacturer instructions, and Children’s Harbor policies.
- Minimize disruptions to classroom activities and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while working around children.
- Interact professionally and respectfully with children, families, employees, vendors, and visitors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Inclement Weather and Emergency Responsibilities
- Assist with ensuring that Children’s Harbor buildings, parking lots, entrances, sidewalks, playgrounds, and grounds are safe and suitable for occupancy.
- Help prepare facilities in advance by checking equipment and ensuring necessary supplies are available.
- Assist with snow and ice removal, storm debris, water intrusion, and other weather-related conditions.
- Report hazardous conditions or property damage that may affect the safe operation of a center.
- Respond to emergency or modified work schedules when notified by the Facility Technician or designated supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least one year of experience in maintenance, facilities, construction, groundskeeping, custodial services, or a related field preferred.
- Basic knowledge of general building maintenance, minor plumbing, electrical fixtures, carpentry, painting, and groundskeeping.
- Ability to safely operate common hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and determine when a repair requires assistance from a licensed professional.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assignments with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail, dependability, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate and interact appropriately with children and adults.
- Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Must be able to travel between Children’s Harbor locations as assigned.
- Must successfully complete all background checks, health screenings, and other requirements applicable to employees working in a licensed childcare environment.
- Must complete required safety, child protection, and agency training within the designated timeframes.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, and pull.
- Safely lift, carry, move, or position items weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Climb ladders and work at moderate heights.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Safely operate tools, equipment, and agency vehicles.
- Visually inspect facilities, playgrounds, equipment, and grounds for maintenance needs and safety concerns.
Working Conditions
This position may involve exposure to dust, dirt, cleaning products, noise, moving equipment, outdoor weather conditions, and other conditions associated with building and grounds maintenance. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
Because work may be performed during operational hours, the Maintenance Assistant must remain alert to the presence of children and take all necessary precautions to secure work areas, tools, equipment, and materials.
