Job description

Respiratory Equipment Specialist (Part-Time)

Location:Baystate Medical Center - Springfield, MA
Schedule:16 hours per week (Flexible schedule; four 4-hour shifts)

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Care, the Respiratory Equipment Specialist is responsible for maintaining respiratory care equipment and supplies to support safe, high-quality patient care. This position oversees equipment cleaning, disinfection, inventory management, preventive maintenance coordination, and equipment distribution while ensuring compliance with hospital policies and infection prevention standards. The Respiratory Equipment Specialist also serves as a resource for respiratory equipment and assists with training of Respiratory Technical Assistants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean, disinfect, sterilize, inspect, and prepare respiratory equipment according to hospital and infection prevention standards.
  • Maintain inventory levels of respiratory equipment and supplies to ensure clinical areas are adequately stocked.
  • Order supplies and equipment as needed and monitor stock levels.
  • Maintain equipment service records and coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs with Clinical Engineering.
  • Oversee rental equipment, including tracking, distribution, and timely returns.
  • Perform routine maintenance of respiratory equipment storage areas, including pediatric, NICU, and ICU satellite equipment rooms.
  • Evaluate new respiratory equipment and products, gather user feedback, and make recommendations to department leadership.
  • Meet with vendors and sales representatives to review new respiratory care technologies.
  • Train and orient new Respiratory Technical Assistants on equipment cleaning, handling, and departmental procedures.
  • Assist with interviewing and onboarding new technical staff as requested.
  • Follow departmental policies, safety standards, infection prevention practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, excellent customer service, and respect for patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to safely lift, transport, and move respiratory equipment throughout the hospital.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in healthcare, medical equipment processing, respiratory care support, central sterile processing, or a related field.
  • Experience managing medical equipment inventories or supplies.
  • Familiarity with hospital infection prevention and equipment sterilization practices.
