Description
Summary of Functions
Throughout the school year, the Music Teacher delivers music instruction and experiences, while keeping in mind the Montessori curriculum, to students during the school day. Opportunities may be available for Kids Club and Summer Discovery Camp teaching.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides 2-4 hours of supervised music classes to each class per week. Working on a graduating scale, the teacher will begin with short music classes, increasing up to a maximum of 1 hour a class period.
  • Provides opportunities for the students to learn new movements, finger plays, rhymes and songs.
  • Provides music appreciation for all students. This includes discussions about famous musicians and activities to enrich each lesson.
  • Provides introductions to the different types of instruments (string, woodwind, etc.)
  • Prepares the students and staff for 2 concerts, winter and spring, throughout the school year. The music teacher is responsible for choosing the material, having it approved by the School Director, playing the approved songs on the piano whole children sing, working with the students to learn all material and leading the performance.
  • Meets the emotional needs of each child: talks with, smiles at and gives tender affection to each child.
  • Ensures children are supervised at all times. Monitors all children in the group to ensure their safety, health, and well-being.
  • Creates a stimulating environment for the child by conducting developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Interacts with and provides guidance and care to all children within the school.
  • Encourages participation and positive interaction with other children.
  • Redirects undesirable behavior to promote positive socialization.
  • Represents Schoolhouse Montessori Academy in a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service training, and other events, workshops and seminars as requested by the School Director.
  • Maintains consistent and regular attendance as an essential function of the position of the Music Teacher.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the School Director.
  • Will facilitate the end of the year all school concert to highlight what the students have learned.

Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Must possess knowledge of music theory and musical instruments.
  • Inspires a love for music in the students by engaging them through creating, performing, and participating in music.
  • Must be able to play the piano.
  • Ability to manage flexible hours.
  • Evidence of enjoying being around children.
  • Demonstrates kindness, even temperedness, and patience towards children and parents.

Position Requirements
Physical Requirements
Capable of performing the physical requirements of the position which include, but are not limited to:
  • Lifting up to 30 pounds (moving student desks, lifting a box of photocopier paper, lifting and placing a child into a car seat).
  • Standing and walking around the school as needed to monitor, supervise, and interact with students and staff.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time, such as staff meetings, conferences, student activities, office functions.
  • Communicating effectively in spoken and written word.
  • Having adequate vision, hearing, and speaking levels in order to see and interpret the school environment, hear students and staff, and speak clearly and with sufficient volume for all students and staff to hear.
