ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting for an Accounting Assistant I - Part-Time, in the Finance Department. This position will primarily be assigned to the Utility Billing/Information Desk area, providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers, and performing cashiering and accounting-related work. The Finance Department's goal is to provide timely and accurate financial information to City Management, City Council, and the public, while responsibly managing the City's assets, including cash and investments.
Under the direct supervision of the Finance Manager or Supervising Accounting Technician, the Accounting Assistant will perform a wide variety of accounting and statistical record-keeping assignments related to maintaining financial and statistical records. This position may provide support in one or more of the following areas: accounts receivable, accounts payable, utility billing, and/or the front desk information.
This role offers opportunities to build foundational experience in municipal finance and may serve as a steppingstone to the Accounting Assistant I/II classification, depending on performance and experience gained.

Staff work directly with residents and businesses to answer questions, explain utility accounts and billing, process payments, resolve concerns, and ensure customers receive courteous, timely, and professional assistance whether in person, by phone, or online.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Any combination of training and experience equivalent to High School graduation or G.E.D and two years of experience in accounting and clerical work, including responsibility for handling and accounting for cash and/or maintaining accounting records. Prefer 15 units of college level accounting.
  2. Keyboarding 25 net words per minute, and proficient in 10-key by touch and Windows environment.
  3. Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicles.
  5. Prefer bilingual (Spanish/English).
  6. Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check for employment.
  7. Prefer non-tobacco user.

Other Information
Part-time employees are non-benefited, at-will positions. Part-time employees are enrolled in the PARS retirement system with the City making an employer contribution and the employee contribution (6.2%) being deducted from your payroll check. The PARS retirement system is in lieu of participating in social security. You will, however, participate in the Medicare portion of social security as that is a required program. Part-time employees may also be eligible for paid sick leave.
Work Hours
Part-Time employees must have availability to work the designated work schedule for the position and must be available to work additional or less hours as needed. The maximum work hours are 25 hours per week and may not exceed 108 hours per month.
Payroll
All City employees are paid monthly, on the first business day of each month for the prior calendar month via direct deposit.
Special Note
All recreation employees will attend a once-a-year, week-long training session which usually occurs during the second week of June.
