What is a part time engineering student?

Part-time engineering students are individuals who are enrolled in an engineering degree program but take fewer courses per semester than full-time students, often due to work, family, or other commitments. This flexible approach allows them to balance their studies with other responsibilities, although it typically extends the time needed to complete their degree. Part-time students have access to the same curriculum and resources as full-time students but may have different course loads and schedules. Many universities offer support and resources tailored to part-time students to help them succeed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineering student?

To thrive as a Part Time Engineering Student, a solid background in mathematics, science, and problem-solving, along with enrollment in an accredited engineering program, is essential. Familiarity with design software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), basic programming languages, and laboratory equipment is often necessary. Strong time management, communication, and teamwork skills help students balance academic and work commitments and collaborate effectively. These skills and qualities are important to ensure academic success, practical learning, and effective contribution to both coursework and any related work experience.

How do part time engineering students typically balance coursework with hands-on projects or internships?

Part-time engineering students often face the challenge of managing academic responsibilities alongside practical experiences such as internships or project work. Many universities offer flexible class schedules, including evening or weekend courses, to help accommodate work commitments. It's common for students to collaborate closely with academic advisors and employers to align project deadlines and work hours, ensuring a manageable workload. Developing strong time management skills and regularly communicating with both professors and supervisors are key strategies for success in this role.

Job description

Southern California Institute of Technology (SCIT) is seeking part-time faculty to teach bachelor's-level courses in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
This position is well suited for engineering professionals and experienced educators who enjoy working directly with students and applying engineering concepts through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory activities, and project-based learning.
Courses are offered primarily during evening hours, generally beginning at approximately 6:00 p.m.
, and are typically scheduled two to three evenings per week. Courses may be offered in-person at SCIT's campus in Anaheim or remotely through synchronous and/or asynchronous instruction. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to teach in person.
Many engineering courses combine lecture and laboratory instruction. Faculty should therefore be comfortable teaching in laboratory environments, supervising hands-on activities, assisting students with engineering projects, and connecting theoretical concepts to practical applications.
Opportunities for expanded teaching assignments and potential full-time faculty appointments may be available to individuals who demonstrate exceptional instructional ability, subject-matter expertise, and a strong commitment to teaching excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate Electrical and Electronic Engineering courses within areas of expertise. Potential subjects include introductory electricity and circuits, digital electronics, semiconductor devices, power electronics, FPGA and digital system design, embedded systems, robotics, control systems, MATLAB, signals and systems, digital signal processing (DSP), electric power systems, power distribution and protection, electric machines, electromagnetic field theory, and other subjects within the discipline.
  • Provide effective classroom, laboratory, project-based, and/or online instruction consistent with established course learning outcomes.
  • Guide and supervise students during laboratory exercises and engineering projects, including evaluating student laboratory and project work.
  • Develop and utilize lesson plans, assessments, laboratory activities, and other instructional materials appropriate to course learning objectives.
  • Employ effective teaching strategies that promote student participation, engagement, critical thinking, and application of engineering concepts.
  • Assess student learning and provide regular, meaningful, and timely feedback on assignments, examinations, laboratory work, and projects.
  • Administer and proctor examinations and maintain accurate records of student attendance, academic progress, and grades.
  • Communicate with academic and administrative staff regarding student progress and other matters affecting student success.
  • Submit grades, attendance records, and other required academic documentation in accordance with institutional policies and established deadlines.
  • Participate, as requested, in faculty meetings, curriculum discussions, course improvement activities, and other efforts supporting instructional quality and consistency.
Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least five years of relevant professional, engineering, teaching, or industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge of one or more of the electrical/electronic engineering subject areas taught within SCIT's programs.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to undergraduate students.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to support students in laboratory and/or project-based learning environments.

Preferred

  • Previous teaching experience at an accredited college or university.
  • Experience teaching laboratory-intensive or project-based engineering courses.
  • Experience with synchronous and/or asynchronous online instruction.

SCIT welcomes candidates with strong industry backgrounds who are interested in bringing their professional engineering experience into the classroom. Prior college teaching experience is preferred but is not required for candidates who demonstrate strong technical expertise, communication skills, and an interest in developing as an educator.
