Part Time Engineer information
How do part time engineers balance project responsibilities with limited working hours?
What does a part time engineer do?
Part-time engineers develop and monitor the construction of the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their company or client. Unlike full-time engineers, part-time engineers typically work thirty hours or less a week. Specific job duties vary, depending on their specific engineering industry. For example, civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects for municipalities and other agencies, such as bridges, highways, and airports. As the structures wear down, civil engineers reevaluate the needs of the area and may redesign the current structure or create a new system. Electrical engineers draft plans for electrical systems. Once the systems are created and installed, electrical engineers may also be responsible for maintaining the system to ensure it continues to run efficiently.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time engineer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Part Time Engineer vs Contract Engineer?
| Aspect | Part Time Engineer | Contract Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires relevant engineering degree and certifications | Similar credentials, often with additional contractual agreements |
| Work Environment | Usually works on-site or remotely for multiple employers, flexible hours | Works on specific projects for a set duration, often on-site |
| Employer Usage | Employers hire part-time for ongoing or intermittent tasks | Employers hire contractors for project-based work |
Both Part Time Engineers and Contract Engineers share similar credentials and work environments, but differ mainly in employment structure and duration. Part Time Engineers typically work flexible hours for multiple employers, while Contract Engineers focus on specific projects for a fixed period.

Job description
To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values - integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion - must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.
The YNHHS Building Systems Engineer Program Manager leads high level, cross functional initiatives for the health system's physical and technical infrastructure, ensuring that capital projects, infrastructure upgrades, and system renewals align with long term organizational strategy. This role focuses on mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems, vertical transportation (elevators), and other critical infrastructure across Yale New Haven Health System, consisting of 12 million square feet of hospital, research, and outpatient portfolio. The YNHHS Building Systems Engineer Program Manager works in close partnership with the Strategic Asset Program Manager. The Asset Manager owns the data, analytics, FCI modeling, and capital prioritization inputs, while the YNHHS Building Systems Engineer Program Manager owns program execution, cross functional coordination, and delivery of infrastructure projects.
