How much do part time embedded systems jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time embedded systems in the United States is $137,274.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,500.00 and $163,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Will AI replace embedded programmers?

Embedded programmers design and develop software for embedded systems, and while AI can automate certain coding tasks, it is unlikely to fully replace these professionals due to the need for specialized knowledge of hardware, real-time constraints, and system integration. AI tools may assist embedded programmers by improving efficiency and debugging, but human expertise remains essential for complex system development and troubleshooting.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In embedded systems development, L1, L2, L3, and L4 developers typically refer to different levels of expertise or responsibility, with L1 being entry-level and L4 being senior or lead roles. These levels often indicate the complexity of tasks handled, such as firmware development, hardware integration, or system architecture, and may correspond to experience, certifications, or specific project responsibilities within a company.

What are part-time embedded systems jobs?

Part-time embedded systems jobs involve working on the design, development, and testing of embedded systems, but on a reduced or flexible schedule rather than full-time hours. These roles may include programming microcontrollers, developing firmware, or integrating hardware and software components for specific applications. Part-time positions can be ideal for students, professionals seeking work-life balance, or individuals looking to gain experience in embedded systems without committing to a standard full-time role. Responsibilities and requirements may vary depending on the employer and the complexity of the projects.

What is the difference between Part Time Embedded Systems vs Part Time Firmware Engineer?

AspectPart Time Embedded SystemsPart Time Firmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; certifications like ARM or IoT certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; certifications in embedded development or specific microcontroller platforms
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and integrating embedded hardware/software in various devicesDeveloping, testing, and debugging firmware for embedded hardware
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, automotive, IoT companiesConsumer electronics, industrial automation, IoT, and hardware manufacturing

Part Time Embedded Systems professionals focus on designing and integrating embedded hardware and software, often working on device-level projects. Part Time Firmware Engineers specifically develop and debug firmware for microcontrollers and embedded chips. While both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, embedded systems roles tend to encompass broader hardware integration, whereas firmware engineering emphasizes low-level programming and firmware optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Embedded Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time Embedded Systems Engineer, you generally need a solid background in electrical engineering, programming (C/C++), and experience with microcontrollers or embedded platforms. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and development environments such as Keil, IAR, or Arduino, as well as knowledge of real-time operating systems (RTOS), is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to manage projects efficiently and collaborate with teams despite limited hours. These competencies ensure reliable, high-quality embedded solutions and help you make meaningful contributions within a flexible or reduced schedule.

What is the hourly rate for embedded developer?

The hourly rate for a part-time embedded systems developer typically ranges from $30 to $80, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Skilled developers with specialized knowledge in microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and hardware integration tend to command higher rates.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software, aerospace, or electrical engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding managerial or executive positions, or possessing rare expertise and certifications.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by someone working part-time in embedded systems?

Part-time embedded systems professionals are often responsible for tasks such as writing and testing firmware, debugging hardware-software interactions, and supporting ongoing projects. A common challenge is managing complex tasks within limited hours, which requires effective time management and clear communication with full-time team members. Additionally, staying updated with project developments and integrating changes can be more demanding when working fewer hours, making collaboration and documentation especially important. Despite these challenges, part-time roles can offer exposure to diverse projects and provide opportunities to strengthen technical skills in a flexible work environment.
