Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Engineering staff to support the reliability of the electric distribution system

  • Work as an entry level engineer doing tasks that support electric reliability, power quality, system protection and plant betterment to improve the electric distribution system.

  • Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills.

This position is for an immediate start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.
Minimum Requirements

  • Current student, Freshman or Sophomore (as of Fall 2026)

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited electrical or mechanical engineering program.

  • Able to commute to 790 S. Buchanan Amarillo, TX or 4201 Frankford Lubbock, TX

  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and part time during the school semester (up to 20 hours a week)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher

  • Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework, including classes in mathematics, physics and basic electric circuits

  • Experience or Proficiency with Microsoft office suite
