CertificationsDriver's license, possibly a clean driving recordSame as Part Time Driver, may require additional certifications for specialized vehicles
Employment StatusPart-time, often seasonal or flexibleFull-time, permanent employment

What does a part time driver do?

Part-time drivers transport passengers or cargo from one location to another. Unlike full-time drivers, part-time drivers work thirty hours or less a week. The type of vehicle they drive depends on their company and industry. For example, part-time bus drivers drop off passengers at different locations along a specific route. Passengers may also choose to take a taxi to their next stop driven by part-time taxi drivers. Part-time commercial truck drivers operate large vehicles to transport goods and materials to construction sites, retail locations, and other destinations. Qualified part-time drivers are in demand in many different industries, including manufacturing, health care, commerce, construction, and commercial trucking.

What is a part time driver?

Part time drivers are individuals who operate vehicles, such as cars, vans, or trucks, on a part-time basis to transport people or goods. They may work for ride-sharing companies, delivery services, courier companies, or other businesses that require flexible driving schedules. Part time drivers typically have set or variable hours that are less than a standard full-time workweek, allowing them to balance driving with other commitments. This role often requires a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and sometimes a background check. Part time driving jobs can offer flexibility and supplemental income for those who do not want a full-time position.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a part time driver?

To thrive as a Part Time Driver, you need a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and knowledge of local routes and traffic laws. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, ride-sharing or delivery apps, and basic vehicle maintenance is often required. Strong time management, communication, and customer service skills help drivers provide a safe and pleasant experience. These skills are essential for ensuring timely, efficient, and safe transportation while meeting customer expectations.

Job Title: Driver

Pay -$19.26 per hour

Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job-related factors.

Work Location/Program Overview:

Drive with us and make a difference! At Good News Garage, we provide vital transportation services to eligible individuals and families across Vermont. Using a fleet of leased and donated vehicles, we help people access jobs, education, childcare, and other essential services. With nearly 20,000 rides delivered annually, our program transforms lives by ensuring reliable access to opportunity and independence.

Position Overview:

As a driver for Good News Garage, your responsibilities include transporting eligible “Ready to Go” clients in an Ascentria fleet vehicle safely, courteously, and punctually according to schedule. You assist both child and adult riders as they enter and exit the vehicle and, when necessary, escort them from the vehicle to their destination. It is essential to understand and correctly use child safety seats. Additionally, you will utilize a smartphone for navigation, accurately record ride data, and communicate with dispatch, among other tasks.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Transport R2G clients safely, courteously, and on schedule to and from designated destinations, including medical appointments, employment sites, childcare facilities, and social services.
  • Assist passengers of all ages and mobility levels with vehicle entry/exit; escort riders to and from the vehicle to their destination door as needed.
  • Properly install, adjust, and secure child safety seats in compliance with state and federal regulations; verify correct use before each trip.
  • Operate company-issued smartphone and GPS/navigation applications to locate clients, follow optimal routes, and record accurate ride data (mileage, times, passenger counts) in real time.
  • Communicate proactively with dispatch regarding schedule changes, delays, route issues, or client concerns.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, report maintenance needs, safety deficiencies, or incidents immediately to the supervisor.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure the interior is safe, sanitary, and welcoming for all riders.

• Comply with all traffic laws, organizational policies, and Ascentria Care Alliance standards of conduct at all times.

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (no CDL required).
  • Proficiency with smartphones, GPS, and basic digital tools.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Personable, patient, and friendly demeanor with riders of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with a pleasant telephone manner.
  • Availability to work shifts between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

• Must pass a background check, Vermont child protection registry check, and adult abuse registry check.

  • Prior experience in passenger transportation, paratransit, or rideshare driving preferred.
  • Prior experience working with children preferred.

When you join R2G, you’re not just taking on a job—you’re stepping into a role that empowers you to grow personally and professionally while contributing to a meaningful mission.

Transform lives and communities with R2G. Apply today to be a part of our mission-driven Team!
