This leaves shippers with peace of mind that their freight is safe with us and allows them to shift their valuable time and efforts to the rest of the process.

The Certified Truck/Semi Mechanic role is an important River City Transport asset division role working in various settings, with a terminal location in Peosta, IA, and has the following job duties:

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair Class 8 tractors and trailers (engine, drivetrain, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical, HVAC, and aftertreatment as applicable).
  • Perform preventative maintenance services (PMs), DOT inspections, and safety checks to keep equipment roadworthy and compliant.
  • Inspect equipment and accurately document findings, repairs performed, and parts used (work orders, inspection forms, and maintenance logs).
  • Coordinate with the Fleet Manager, dispatch, and drivers to prioritize repairs, minimize downtime, and return equipment to service quickly.
  • Respond to breakdowns as needed (in-yard/terminal support and limited roadside coordination, depending on business needs).
  • Conduct trailer repairs including lights/wiring, air systems, landing gear, doors, floors, tires/wheels, and ABS diagnostics.
  • Use diagnostic software and tools as required; interpret fault codes and verify repairs through road tests/functional checks.
  • Maintain a clean, safe shop environment and follow all safety policies (lockout/tagout, PPE, lifting/rigging, proper disposal of fluids and materials).
  • Communicate repair status, parts needs, and additional recommended work clearly and professionally.
  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

The ideal candidate will have the following traits and skills:

  • Certified/credentialed heavy-duty technician (e.g., ASE certifications preferred) with a minimum of 3 years of Class 7/8 tractor-trailer maintenance and repair experience.
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT inspection requirements and the ability to perform and document inspections accurately.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with electrical systems, air brake systems, and basic engine performance troubleshooting.
  • A prideful mindset geared toward providing world class service to our internal driver team and valued customers.
  • Ability to repeat processes consistently, reducing errors and ensuring a high level of safety and quality.
  • Strong time management skills, the ability to prioritize, and comfort working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.
  • Commitment to treating company equipment and tools as if they were your own.
  • Organization skills and the ability to keep track of parts, repair orders, and timely submission of paperwork.
  • Able to perform physical tasks in a safe manner every time you are working for RCT (lifting, kneeling, climbing, working under/around equipment).
  • Ability to take direction and implement feedback from the Leadership team.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL (or willingness to obtain) preferred.
