How do part time design engineers using SolidWorks typically collaborate with full time team members and manage project handoffs?

Part-time Design Engineers using SolidWorks often work closely with full-time engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders through regular meetings, shared project management tools, and detailed documentation. Effective communication is key, as clear notes and version control help ensure smooth handoffs and continuity when shifting between team members. Many organizations use cloud-based platforms like PDM (Product Data Management) to streamline collaboration and maintain up-to-date design files, making it easier for part-time staff to stay aligned with ongoing projects. Flexibility and proactive updates on progress or challenges also help foster strong teamwork and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time design engineer using SolidWorks?

To thrive as a Part Time Design Engineer using SolidWorks, you need a solid background in mechanical or product design, proficiency in CAD modeling, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Mastery of SolidWorks software and familiarity with related tools like PDM systems or FEA simulation modules are essential, and certifications such as CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you deliver high-quality designs and collaborate efficiently in a part-time capacity. These competencies ensure you can create accurate models, meet project deadlines, and contribute valuable technical input within limited working hours.

You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative designs that balance technical excellence, sustainability, and constructability. Additional responsibilities include: Develop and evaluate structural design concepts based on site conditions, project objectives, regulatory requirements, and constructability considerations.

Perform structural assessments and engineering analyses to support feasibility studies, planning efforts, and detailed design. Prepare high-quality technical deliverables, including engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, and contract documents. Collaborate with civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions that comply with applicable codes and standards.

Skills & Experience: Successful candidates will bring hands-on experience in structural design for water/wastewater infrastructure projects, with proficiency in STAAD Pro and working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.

A solid understanding of applicable codes and standards-such as the International Building Code (IBC) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines-is essential. You should be comfortable preparing and reviewing technical drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, and schedules, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. This role is well-suited for engineers who thrive in collaborative environments and are motivated by sustainability, resilience, and innovative problem-solving.

Qualifications & Experience: Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field 5 years of structural engineering design experience, preferably supporting water/wastewater infrastructure projects Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline EIT certification or PE license strongly preferred Why Arcadis.
