Job description

Title:                                8.01   Bus Driver

Reports To:                    Director of Transportation

Employment Status:      Part time

FLSA Status:                   Non-Exempt

4 hours per day, AM shift and PM shift 
$23.56 per hour

Qualifications:       

  1. Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement; bus drivers' certificate.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Must meet requirements of the Ohio Department of Education and the district's Board Policy.
  4. Completion of satisfactory pre-employment driver's training program, and basic bus driver's education program
  5. Be physically qualified as determined by annual physical examination required by the State of Ohio            
  6. Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents and the community.
  7. Conscientious and assumes responsibility for own work performance.
  8. Good health, high moral character and good attendance record.
  9. Demonstrate enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid all students. 

General Description:  

Responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of school pupils within the guidelines of the State of Ohio and the policies established by the Board of Education, maintaining discipline on the bus and promoting good public relations by neat appearance, proper attitude and suitable appearance of the school bus.

Essential Functions:

1.  Complete a safety check of the school bus as required by the State of Ohio Regulation 3301-83-11 before each run.

2.  Board the bus at least fifteen (15) minutes before the scheduled morning departure and at least five (5) minutes before departing the parking area in the afternoon.

3.  In cold weather, warm up the engine gradually.  Do not race the engine.  Be sure the windshield, side windows and all mirrors are clear.

4.  Complete established pre-trip inspection.  Before starting on a scheduled bus route to pick up of discharge pupils, the driver shall check headlights, tail and stop lights, warning lights, directional lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, heater and defroster, dashboard gauges, steering brakes or any other feature which may affect the safe, efficient operation of the vehicle.

5.  Report equipment malfunctions in schooldude and give to the bus mechanics.

6.  Responsible for safe operating conditions and cleanliness of the bus.

7.  Maintain pupil control and report any violation to the transportation supervisor according to procedure.

8.  Maintain routes, stops and time schedules as established by the supervisor.  Make suggestions for more efficient routing but permission must be granted by the transportation supervisor prior to any change.

9.  Report any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the transportation supervisor.

10. Follow properly approved procedures for reporting bus accidents and complete forms provided.

11. Will be present or available at all bus driver meetings and in the event of emergency dismissal.

12. Notify the transportation supervisor or designee in the case of illness daily or of continued illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver and complete in Frontline/AESOP. 

13. Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation and the appearance of the school bus.

14. Share in the responsibility for driving for a school-sponsored event and/or approved field trip.

15. Shall conduct a minimum of three (3) rear door emergency evacuation drills on each school bus run each year.

16. Shall be required to attend one (1) annual inservice program.

17. Prepare reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists and accident reports as required by the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Education and the Board of Education.

18. Brief passengers on safety protocol.  

19. Do not leave any loose items on the bus. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

2.  Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

3. Conduct other duties related to the bus driver's duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

1.     Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.

2.     Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.

3.     Occasional interaction among unruly children.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.
