The College of Science at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, invites applications for Part-Time Lecturer positions to teach its college-level SCI courses, including the College of Science First-Year Experience sequence. About Cal Poly Pomona
Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn- by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.
The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.
About the College of Science
The College of Science prepares students to apply scientific knowledge with purpose and impact, advancing Cal Poly Pomona's "Become by doing" philosophy at one of the nation's leading polytechnic universities for diversity and economic mobility. From their first year through graduation, students engage directly in scientific practice, designing and conducting experiments, working with advanced laboratory and field instrumentation, and applying data, computation, and theory to address real-world scientific and societal challenges. Experiential learning is central to the college's identity. Faculty integrate hands-on inquiry, research, and problem-based learning throughout the curriculum.
The college's SCI courses serve students from across all College of Science departments. They emphasize interdisciplinary problem solving, scientific reasoning, quantitative and data literacy, communication, and the academic skills that help students thrive as university learners. The First-Year Experience sequence is a college-wide learning community that introduces new students to academic expectations, intellectual challenges, and the resources and opportunities available to them, while connecting them to faculty mentors and peers early in their academic journey.
The Position
The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available. We welcome applications from individuals who are experienced and student-centered to teach in the following subject areas:
- College of Science First-Year Experience courses - SCI 1010 / SCI 1010A (Science and Mathematics: Freshman Experience I) and SCI 1020A (Science and Mathematics: Freshman Experience II).
- Other interdisciplinary, college-level SCI courses supporting scientific reasoning, quantitative and data literacy, scientific communication, and student success
Responsibilities
Teach assigned curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load. Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend courses. Lecturers are expected to foster an inclusive, student-centered learning environment, contribute to the goals of the First-Year Experience learning community where assigned, and collaborate with college faculty and staff on course coordination and student success.
Required Qualifications
- A Master's degree in a science, mathematics, education, or closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the college or university level and to support a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in a science discipline or a closely related field.
- Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and the ability to furnish evidence of strong teaching.
- Experience teaching first-year, general education, or interdisciplinary science courses, and familiarity with first-year student success and learning-community practices.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, equity-minded teaching and student mentoring.
