Part Time Data Science Astronomy information

What is a part time data science astronomy?

A part-time data science astronomy job involves applying data science techniques, such as statistical analysis, machine learning, and programming, to analyze astronomical data on a flexible, reduced-hour schedule. These roles typically assist research teams in processing large datasets from telescopes or simulations, identifying patterns, and generating scientific insights. Part-time positions may be ideal for students, researchers, or professionals seeking to balance work with other commitments while contributing to astronomy projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time data science astronomer?

To thrive as a Part Time Data Science Astronomer, you need a strong background in astronomy, data analysis, statistics, and typically a degree in physics, astronomy, or a related quantitative field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R, experience with data visualization tools, and knowledge of astronomical data systems or software like Astropy are usually required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex results clearly help individuals stand out in this role. These skills are essential for extracting meaningful insights from large datasets, advancing astronomical research, and effectively collaborating with scientific teams.

What are some common challenges faced by part time data science astronomers, and how can they be managed?

Part-time data science professionals in astronomy often encounter challenges such as managing large datasets, staying updated with rapidly evolving research, and coordinating with full-time team members who may be on different schedules. To address these challenges, clear communication and regular check-ins with the team are essential. Additionally, leveraging collaborative tools and maintaining well-documented code can help ensure smooth workflow and knowledge sharing, making it easier to contribute effectively even with limited hours.

How is data science used in astronomy?

Data science in astronomy involves analyzing large datasets from telescopes and space missions to identify patterns, classify celestial objects, and detect phenomena such as exoplanets or supernovae. Data scientists use tools like Python, R, and machine learning algorithms to process and interpret complex astronomical data efficiently.

Is it possible to work part-time as a data science astronomer?

Part-time roles in data science astronomy are possible, especially in research institutions, observatories, or academic settings where flexible schedules or project-based work are common. These positions often require strong analytical skills, proficiency with programming tools like Python or R, and may involve remote work options, but availability depends on the organization and specific project needs.

Position Summary

A part time data science position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nicole Ferrara in the Center for Neurobiology of Stress Resilience and Psychiatric Disorders, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. The focus of the lab is social fear memory with particular emphasis on interactions between the environment, fear, and social behaviors and how they impact neural circuits during development. This position is expected to last 3 months to a year, depending on the candidate’s availability and the needs of the lab. We anticipate this position to work 20 to 30hrs per week.

The Ferrara lab records neural activity in vivo via fiber photometry and syncs brain recordings to behavior. We are looking for candidates who can establish a strong fiber photometry-behavior analysis pipeline and train lab members to implement.

Our generous benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision plans; paid parental leave; flexible spending accounts; and a 403(b) retirement plan which includes an 8% employer contribution after two years of service. RFUMS is committed to employee well-being and work-life balance.
