GVL County High-School Work-Based Learning Program | Part-Time Geotechnical Soils and Concrete Laboratory Technician

Location: Greenville, South Carolina

Reports To: Lab Manager

Status: Part-Time

Position Overview

As a Part-Time Geotechnical Soils and Concrete Laboratory Technician at Bunnell Lammons Engineering, Inc. (BLE), you will assume a pivotal role in our organization's dedication to excellence in our AASHTO and CCRL accredited laboratory. Reporting directly to our Lab manager. An essential aspect of your role is to demonstrate strong leadership skills and contribute to the continuous development of a collaborative team environment. Your expertise and dedication will play a critical role in maintaining the high standards of our laboratory and ensuring the success of our projects.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School or General Education Equivalent (GED)
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
  • Basic level proficiency in MS Office applications (Word & Excel).
  • Good handwriting skills
  • Ability to use hand tools and testing apparatuses.
  • Ability to stand, squat, kneel or bend over for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to efficiently work independently while completing scheduled tasks, and/or lead a project team.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with team members, and BLE leadership.

Daily Functions and Duties

  • Laboratory sample receipt and processing
  • Demolding Cylinders
  • Writing Lab ID's
  • Reading a tape measure and Calipers
  • Using a square and/or straight-edge ruler
  • Preparing proctors (Drying dirt in pans)
  • Performing basic soil and concrete tests
  • Learning how to perform some of the tests below:
    • Soil and Aggregate testing
    • Triaxial compression
    • Direct shear
    • Consolidation
    • Proctors
    • Grain size analysis
    • Atterberg limits
    • Permeability
    • CBR
    • Organic contents
    • Specificity gravity
    • pH
    • Resistivity
    • Concrete strength testing
