EMT-BASIC
EMERGENCY SERVICES
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision performs skilled work in rescuing the sick or injured and providing basic medical care and transportation.   An employee in this class drives an ambulance to the scene of an emergency and applies necessary patient care to sick or injured persons, and transports persons to a medical facility.  An employee in this class performs basic life saving techniques assigned to the EMT-Basic by the N.C. Office of Emergency Services and the N.C. Medical Board.  Work is performed in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but the employee must exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing a victim’s condition and providing basic patient care. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public.  This position reports to the EMS Shift Supervisor or Assistant Shift Supervisor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Responds to emergency calls as an ambulance driver or attendant, performs necessary rescue work, administers necessary emergency medical care, and transports persons to appropriate medical facilities.
  • Performs a thorough inspection of assigned ALS vehicle and all equipment daily; restocks vehicle with all supplies as needed.
  • Participates in a continuing education training program in technical medical work and in ambulance service and operation.
  • Participates in providing public education about EMS for schools and civic organizations.
  • Conducts tours of bases as requested.
  • Cleans ambulances, equipment, and stations.
  • Maintains state certifications as a EMT-Basic, and hazardous materials operations level responder.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a high school or completion of GED, supplemented by courses in emergency medical care, and at least 1 year of experience as an EMT-Basic, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Certification by the North Carolina Office of EMS as an EMT-Basic.  Certification by the N.C. Dept. of Insurance as an hazardous materials operations level responder.

LOSS OF CERTIFICATION
Any loss of certification may result in an appropriate reduction of pay and classification, or may affect employment status, at the discretion of the department head and County Manager.
