The Savannah Police Department is seeking an experienced, dedicated law enforcement professional to join our Criminal Investigations Division as a Part-Time Detective. This unique opportunity is ideal for a current or former certified peace officer who has a passion for investigative work and wants to continue making a meaningful impact while enjoying the flexibility of a reduced work schedule.
As a Part-Time Detective, you will conduct thorough, impartial investigations of criminal offenses; identifies, collects, and preserves evidence; prepares cases for prosecution; and works cooperatively with prosecutors, victims, witnesses, and allied agencies.

Compensation and Schedule
  • Hourly rate commensurate with experience and departmental pay scale.

Essential Job Functions
Case Investigation
  • Conducts follow-up investigations of assigned criminal cases, including property crimes, financial crimes, crimes against persons, and cold cases as assigned.
  • Reviews initial incident reports, identifies investigative leads, and develops case strategies.
  • Locates, interviews, and obtains statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects in accordance with constitutional and departmental requirements.
  • Conducts photographic lineups, canvases, and surveillance activities as needed.
  • Maintains detailed, accurate, and organized case files documenting all investigative activity.

Evidence Collection and Management
  • Identifies, collects, preserves, and processes physical and digital evidence in accordance with department policy and chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Submits evidence to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab or other approved facilities for forensic analysis and tracks results.
  • Reviews and analyzes video surveillance footage, phone records, financial records, and digital evidence.

Legal Process and Prosecution Support
  • Prepares and executes search warrants and arrest warrants; drafts supporting affidavits establishing probable cause.
  • Presents cases to the District Attorney's Office; briefs Assistant District Attorneys on case facts and evidence.
  • Testifies in municipal, state, superior court, and federal proceedings, including grand jury presentations, preliminary hearings, and trials.
  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate investigative reports, supplemental reports, and case summaries.

Collaboration and Communication
  • Coordinates with patrol officers, crime scene technicians, forensic analysts, and other detectives on active investigations.
  • Maintains liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on cases of shared jurisdiction.
  • Communicates with victims and their families regarding case status in a professional and compassionate manner, in compliance with Georgia's Crime Victims' Bill of Rights.
  • Attend unit briefings, case reviews, and required training sessions.

Other Duties
  • Enters and retrieves information from GCIC/NCIC and departmental records management systems.
  • Assists with major case callouts and critical incidents as available.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Detective Sergeant or Division Commander.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred.
  • Current Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer, or eligibility for certification/reinstatement.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of sworn law enforcement experience; prior experience as a detective or criminal investigator strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, credit check, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
  • Flexible availability required; some evenings, weekends, or on-call hours may be necessary based on case needs and court schedules.

Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of criminal investigation techniques, rules of evidence, criminal law, and constitutional requirements (search and seizure, Miranda, due process).
  • Knowledge of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) and applicable federal statutes.
  • Strong interviewing and interrogation skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to draft warrants, affidavits, and detailed reports.
  • Proficiency with records management systems, databases, and standard office software.
  • Ability to work independently, manage a caseload, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to testify credibly and professionally in court.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in both office and field settings, including crime scenes and court facilities.
  • May require exposure to hazardous situations, distressing scenes, and inclement weather
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
