What is a part time counselor?

Part time counselors are professionals who provide counseling services on a flexible or reduced-hour basis, rather than working full time. They may work in schools, clinics, community organizations, or private practices, helping clients with issues such as mental health, career guidance, or personal development. Part time counselors often balance their schedules to accommodate other commitments or offer services during evenings and weekends. Their responsibilities and qualifications are generally similar to those of full-time counselors, though their caseloads may be smaller. This role is ideal for those seeking flexibility in their work-life balance while still making a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time counselor?

To thrive as a Part Time Counselor, you generally need a degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field, along with relevant licensure or certification depending on your location. Familiarity with counseling software, electronic record-keeping systems, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and empathy help counselors build trust and effectively support clients. These competencies ensure that counselors can provide ethical, effective guidance and emotional support, even within limited part-time hours.

How does a part time counselor typically coordinate with full-time staff and other team members to support clients effectively?

As a part-time counselor, collaboration with full-time staff and other professionals is essential to maintain continuity of care for clients. This often involves attending regular team meetings, sharing progress notes through secure digital systems, and participating in case consultations. While schedules may differ, part-time counselors usually coordinate closely with supervisors and case managers to ensure everyone is updated on client needs and treatment plans. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating into the broader counseling team and providing consistent support.

Job description

Description
Help Nourish Hope and Improve Lives.
At our privately owned oncology practice, exceptional care extends beyond treatment. We are seeking a Part-Time Registered Dietician who is passionate about helping patients navigate the nutritional challenges of cancer treatment. In this role, you will empower patients with personalized guidance, support their overall well-being, and play a vital role in their journey toward better health and improved quality of life.
Highlands Oncology began in 1996 with three physicians and a desire to change the face of oncology care in our community. Dr. Malcolm Hayward, Dr. Dan Bradford, and Dr. Thad Beck knew that patients do better at home, in the community where they live and work, and where their support system is already in place. In furthering that goal, Highlands has grown with the region from a single location 26 years ago, to 6 locations in Northwest and Northcentral Arkansas today employing more than 800 diverse team members.
As Northwest Arkansas continues to grow, so must the services and providers available in the region. Highlands Oncology is committed to remaining on the cutting edge to ensure our community has access to the very best cancer care. What we have is something quite unique right here in our own backyard with a caring multidisciplinary team focused on treating patients like family.
Job Summary: Provide medical nutrition therapy to patients with a cancer diagnosis, who may be undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery, and may have special nutrition needs, such as feeding tubes.
Job Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy to patients at Highlands Oncology.
  • Provide diet consultation, nutrition assessment, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation of adult patients.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and family members on normal nutrition and/or therapeutic diets with consideration to their education, readiness to learn, cultural, and socio-economic background. All education sessions will be documented in the medical record.
  • Work in conjunction with referring providers and coordination of care.
  • Develop patient education such as handouts, recipes, videos, and other resources.
  • Assist in the development of additional support programs designed to meet specialized nutrition needs for patient populations, such as those with feeding tubes, breast cancer, and / or other topics as needed.
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (oncologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists) to ensure coordinated care.

Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of cancer-related nutrition issues, including cachexia, treatment-related side effects, and malnutrition.
  • Experience developing individualized nutrition care plans that support treatment goals (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy).
  • Competency in documenting care in an EMR system with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to educate and counsel patients and families with clarity, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Strong motivational interviewing skills to support behavior change during complex, high-stress diagnoses.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills to translate complex nutrition concepts into understandable guidance.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload while adapting to the changing needs of oncology care.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and staying current on oncology nutrition research.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities to balance scheduled consults, follow-ups, and documentation.
  • Experience maintaining compliance with HIPAA and clinic policies related to patient information and safety.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, patient-centered clinical environment.

Certifications/Licenses/Education/or Experience in a related field:
  • Master's degree from an accredited Nutrition or Dietetics program.
  • Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Licensed with the Arkansas Dietetics Licensing Board or eligible upon hire.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk.
  • Computer use that requires visual acuity, typing, use of mouse/keyboard, and staring at a screen for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifting objects of up to 25 pounds such as files, office supplies, assisting patients when needed, etc.
  • Walking and standing for continuous periods around the office or clinic as needed.
  • Fine motor skills for tasks like typing, writing, handling small objects or equipment and materials.
  • Adequate mobility for daily interactions, delivering packages throughout the clinic daily, and traveling between company locations as needed.

Work Environment:
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Due to the nature of our business and the use of radiation and hazardous chemicals, it is imperative that all employees foster a culture and environment of safety.
  • Safety Sensitive: In accordance with the Arkansas code this position is designated as a safety sensitive position wherein the employee performing the job duties under the influence may constitute a threat to health or safety.
