Job description

Primary Summary:

Are you ready for an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children? The YMCA of Greater Birmingham is seeking new team members to join the Afterschool Care staff.

Our counselors serve as positive role models, ensuring that children have a safe and fun place to go after school. You'll be instrumental in creating this fun and engaging environment where children can grow, learn, and have a blast!

This part-time opportunity requires you to be availableMonday-Friday from school dismissal to 6:00 p.m. on school days.We offer a flexible schedule that allows you to balance work with other activities. Counselors are responsible for supervising and leading groups of children through an exciting and varied curriculum of games and activities.

Schools served: Paine, Cahaba, Magnolia

Essential Functions:

  1. Engages and supervises a group of children. Program hours are Monday - Friday from school dismissal (varies per site) to 6:00 pm.

  2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA core curriculum components.

  3. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.

  4. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.

  5. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

  6. Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.

  7. Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will:

  1. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens
  2. Attend required abuse risk management training annually
  3. Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.
  4. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  5. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum age of 18 years old
  2. HS Diploma; College level education in one of these areas is preferred.
  3. Prior experience in education, recreation, physical education, teaching or childcare preferred.
  4. Must be available Monday-Friday from school dismissal to 6:00 p.m. on school days.
  5. Successful completion of background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening.
  6. Acquire and maintain the following certifications before start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
  7. First Aid/ CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
  8. Requisite Risk Management/Safety Online Training Modules (completed before start date and repeated annually).


Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  2. Ability to be physically active to include, but not limited to walking, sitting, squatting, standing, kneeling, climbing, running, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.
  3. Must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
