Part Time Cost Controller information

Do I need a CPA to become a controller?

A Part Time Cost Controller typically does not need a CPA license, as the role focuses on managing costs, budgets, and financial analysis rather than public accounting or auditing. Relevant skills include accounting knowledge, financial software proficiency, and industry experience; certifications like CPA can enhance career prospects but are not usually mandatory for this position.

What is the salary of a cost controller?

The salary of a part-time cost controller typically ranges from $20,000 to $50,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Many cost controllers earn additional compensation through bonuses or overtime, especially in construction, manufacturing, or finance sectors where cost management is critical.

What are part time cost controllers?

Part time cost controllers are professionals who work reduced hours and are responsible for monitoring and managing a company's costs and expenses. They analyze financial data, prepare cost reports, and help ensure that projects or operations stay within budget. By working part time, they provide essential cost management support while allowing for flexible work arrangements. Their role is crucial in helping businesses identify cost-saving opportunities and improve financial efficiency.

What key skills and qualifications are needed to excel as a Part Time Cost Controller, and why are they important?

A Part Time Cost Controller typically requires a background in accounting, finance, or business administration, along with analytical skills and attention to detail. Familiarity with financial software such as SAP, Oracle, or Excel, and sometimes certification like CMA, is often expected. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help individuals stand out in this role. Mastering these competencies ensures accurate cost tracking, supports informed decision-making, and helps maintain financial efficiency within an organization.

How much do financial controllers get paid?

Financial controllers typically earn a median annual salary of around $100,000 to $130,000, depending on experience, industry, and location. Part-time cost controllers may earn proportionally less, often paid hourly or on a salary basis adjusted for hours worked, with salaries increasing with certifications like CPA or CMA and experience in financial management and accounting software.

Is a cost controller a good job?

A cost controller is a role focused on monitoring and managing project or organizational expenses, often requiring skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and use of tools like spreadsheets or accounting software. It can be a stable career with opportunities for advancement in finance or project management, especially in industries like construction, manufacturing, or energy. Job satisfaction depends on individual interests in finance and attention to detail.

How does a part-time cost controller typically collaborate with other departments to manage and track project expenses?

A part-time cost controller frequently works with project managers, finance teams, and procurement staff to gather, verify, and analyze cost data. They attend regular meetings to review budgets, track expenditures, and flag any variances from the financial plan. Effective communication is key, as they must ensure that all stakeholders are updated on cost-related issues and can make informed decisions to keep projects within budget. Despite working part-time, their role is integral in maintaining financial discipline across departments.

Job description

About JTG, inc.:
JTG is a 100% employee-owned (ESOP) company with over 30 years of experience supporting U.S. government agencies. We provide language services, analytics, and training services to clients across defense, law enforcement, and civilian agencies.
About the Role:
JTG, inc. is seeking a seasoned Part-Time Controller to provide strategic financial oversight for our 100% employee-owned (ESOP) federal contracting firm. This is a high-level role for a financial professional with deep Deltek Costpoint expertise who thrives on technical accuracy and government-contract compliance. You will oversee the accounting function, manage our indirect rate structure, and keep our accounting practices DCAA-adequate - all on a flexible, part-time schedule.
Pay Range: $60.00 - $75.00 per hour
Status: Part-time
Location: Reston, VA (flexible hybrid work environment)
Key Responsibilities:
โ€ข Deltek Costpoint Integrity: Maintain the integrity of our Deltek Costpoint system, including high-level configuration of projects and cost pools.
โ€ข Budgeting & Cash Forecasting: Lead creation, maintenance, and management of the company-wide annual budget, and integrate it with our 13-week cash flow forecast to align corporate goals with real-time liquidity.
โ€ข ICS Ownership: Personally manage the annual Incurred Cost Submission. Using existing templates, extract data, populate the ICE model, and defend the submission in the event of audit.
โ€ข Indirect Rate Management: Perform monthly true-ups of Fringe, Overhead, and G&A against budgeted targets and provisional billing rates, and provide the CEO with actionable insights on rate variances and profitability.
โ€ข Oversight & Review: Supervise a full-time Accounting Manager who handles daily AP/AR and payroll. Perform final month-end review and sign off on financial statements.
โ€ข Compliance Lead: Maintain DCAA-adequate accounting practices and serve as point of contact for government audit activity, ESOP valuation support, and banking compliance.
Specific Duties
โ€ข Review and approve monthly P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements.
โ€ข Architect and update the 13-week cash flow forecast, reconciling it with company-wide budget targets.
โ€ข Audit labor distributions to ensure proper classification (avoiding mischarges in holiday, PTO, or G&A).
โ€ข Analyze project-level gross margins (PSR reports) and alert leadership to underperforming contracts.
โ€ข Provide technical pricing support for federal cost proposals (RFP/RFQ) on an as-needed, separately scoped basis.
Qualifications:
โ€ข Deltek Mastery: Expert-level Deltek Costpoint proficiency is mandatory - pools, allocations, and budgeting structures, with minimal ramp.
โ€ข Pricing & Cost Volumes: Hands-on experience developing cost/price volumes for federal proposals (RFP/RFQ) - direct labor build-ups, basis-of-estimate (BOE) documentation, indirect and wrap-rate application, and price-to-win analysis - while maintaining cost realism and compliance with solicitation pricing instructions (Section L/M).
โ€ข Experience: 10+ years in GovCon accounting, with proven experience submitting the ICS, managing indirect rates, and building corporate budgets integrated with short-term cash forecasting.
โ€ข Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
โ€ข Efficiency: A results-driven "doer" who can translate data into strategy quickly within a limited-hour format.
Reports to: CEO
