What is a part time controller?

A Part Time Controller is a financial professional who manages an organization’s accounting operations on a part-time basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They are responsible for overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance, often working with multiple clients or businesses. This role is ideal for small to mid-sized companies that need high-level financial expertise but do not require a full-time controller. Part Time Controllers can help businesses save costs while ensuring their finances are well-managed and compliant with regulations.

How to become a part time controller?

To become a part-time controller, you must have significant professional experience and advanced qualifications in accounting, business administration, finance, and management. Typically, a controller has several years of experience as an accountant or auditor. As a part-time controller, you may also have some experience as a full-time controller, but are now working part-time as you near retirement or transition to other responsibilities. You need a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, statistics, or a closely related degree. An advanced degree, such as an MBA is also useful. As an accounting professional, you also must be a certified public accountant or CPA. Excellent leadership skills and strong analytical problem-solving are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time controller?

To thrive as a Part Time Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and budget management, usually backed by a degree in accounting or finance and experience in financial leadership roles. Familiarity with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or NetSuite), ERP systems, and often a CPA or CMA certification is important. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills are crucial for managing priorities, interpreting data, and advising stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and effective strategic support for the organization's goals.

How does a part time controller balance multiple clients or entities, and what time management strategies are helpful?

A part-time controller often works with several clients or manages multiple business units, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Effective controllers prioritize tasks based on deadlines and financial cycles, use cloud-based accounting tools to streamline workflows, and maintain clear documentation for each client. Regular check-ins with client leadership and proactive planning help prevent bottlenecks and ensure accuracy. Time management strategies such as batching similar tasks and setting dedicated hours for each client can greatly improve efficiency and client satisfaction.

Job description

Location: Indianapolis, IN; West of Downtown ; 100% Onsite Base Salary: $130,000-$140,000 + Annual Bonus Potential Job Type: Full-Time Typical Hours: M-F, 8 AM - 5 PM; 40-45 hours Our client, a well-established, privately owned manufacturing company ($25M revenue), is seeking a hands-on Controller to serve as a trusted financial leader and strategic partner to ownership, overseeing the accounting function across multiple operating companies. This is a newly created position driven by growth, not turnover. While the CEO has historically overseen the financial function with support from a part-time Controller, the company has reached the point where he's ready to bring in a dedicated financial leader who can take ownership of the day-to-day accounting operation while helping identify opportunities to strengthen the business. The CEO is looking for more than a traditional Controller. He views this person as his right hand and a key business partner, not simply someone responsible for reporting the numbers and closing the books each month. As he shared, he's looking for someone who wants to "leave their DNA on the business." The ideal person isn't afraid to write their own playbook. They appreciate having the resources and trust to succeed while working for a leader who gives them the space to find the best solution, asks questions, and encourages new ideas. If you're someone who enjoys building, improving, and challenging the status quo, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a growing business. Manage and develop a team of two accounting professionals Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close across six operating brands Prepare consolidated financial statements and executive reporting Manage the general ledger, reconciliations, and financial reporting in ERP Oversee budgeting, cash flow, banking, and day-to-day financial operations Analyze job costing and profitability to improve margins and business performance Partner with production and estimating to strengthen costing and reporting Improve accounting processes, internal controls, and operational efficiency Oversee audits, tax coordination, and external CPA relationships Partner with ownership to support growth, profitability, and strategic decisions Who You Are You want to be more than the person who reports what happened last month. You want to understand why it happened and help influence what happens next. You have 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading the month-end close and preparing financial statements. You have cost accounting experience and a strong understanding of how labor, equipment, and overhead factors into the cost of a job or manufacturing operation. You enjoy finding ways to improve processes and give leadership better visibility. #J-18808-Ljbffr
