What is a part time controller?

A Part Time Controller is a financial professional who manages an organization’s accounting operations on a part-time basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They are responsible for overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance, often working with multiple clients or businesses. This role is ideal for small to mid-sized companies that need high-level financial expertise but do not require a full-time controller. Part Time Controllers can help businesses save costs while ensuring their finances are well-managed and compliant with regulations.

How to become a part time controller?

To become a part-time controller, you must have significant professional experience and advanced qualifications in accounting, business administration, finance, and management. Typically, a controller has several years of experience as an accountant or auditor. As a part-time controller, you may also have some experience as a full-time controller, but are now working part-time as you near retirement or transition to other responsibilities. You need a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, statistics, or a closely related degree. An advanced degree, such as an MBA is also useful. As an accounting professional, you also must be a certified public accountant or CPA. Excellent leadership skills and strong analytical problem-solving are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time controller?

To thrive as a Part Time Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and budget management, usually backed by a degree in accounting or finance and experience in financial leadership roles. Familiarity with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or NetSuite), ERP systems, and often a CPA or CMA certification is important. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills are crucial for managing priorities, interpreting data, and advising stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and effective strategic support for the organization's goals.

How does a part time controller balance multiple clients or entities, and what time management strategies are helpful?

A part-time controller often works with several clients or manages multiple business units, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Effective controllers prioritize tasks based on deadlines and financial cycles, use cloud-based accounting tools to streamline workflows, and maintain clear documentation for each client. Regular check-ins with client leadership and proactive planning help prevent bottlenecks and ensure accuracy. Time management strategies such as batching similar tasks and setting dedicated hours for each client can greatly improve efficiency and client satisfaction.

We provide meaningful work and a pathway to permanent employment for adults facing barriers to the workforce, operating light assembly, packaging, and fulfillment production for commercial customers across multiple sites. Baker is financially stable, mission-driven, and small enough that every member of the team makes a visible difference.

Position Summary

The Accounting & Payroll Administrator is a part-time role (approximately 24 hours per week) responsible for processing payroll accurately and on time, managing unemployment compensation claims, and supporting customer invoicing. The position reports to the Finance Manager/Controller and works closely with production and administrative staff across Baker's sites. This role is well suited to an experienced payroll professional who values steady, flexible part-time work in a supportive, mission-centered environment.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll (primary focus)

- Process weekly payroll for all employees using Paycom, including timekeeping review, corrections, and approvals

- Maintain accurate employee payroll records, including new hires, terminations, rate changes, and deductions

- Administer payroll-related withholdings and remittances, including retirement plan deferrals and benefit deductions

- Respond to employee questions about pay, deductions, and paystubs with accuracy and discretion

- Support quarterly and year-end payroll tax filings and W-2 processing in coordination with the Finance Manager/Controller

Unemployment Compensation

- Receive, track, and respond to unemployment compensation claims in a timely and accurate manner

- Gather supporting documentation from managers and personnel files as needed for claim responses

- Monitor claim outcomes and charges, and flag discrepancies or issues for the Finance Manager/Controller

Invoicing Support

- Prepare and send customer invoices for contract production work, based on production and shipping records

- Track outstanding invoices and support follow-up on receivables

- Maintain organized billing records and assist with month-end close as needed

Qualifications

- 3+ years of payroll processing experience; experience with Paycom or a comparable payroll platform strongly preferred

- Working knowledge of payroll tax, wage and hour basics, and unemployment compensation processes

- Strong attention to detail and a track record of accuracy under recurring deadlines

- Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential employee and financial information

- Comfort with spreadsheets and standard office software; ability to learn new systems quickly

- Experience in a nonprofit or small-company setting is a plus, as is comfort working alongside a workforce development program

Schedule, Compensation & Benefits

- Part-time, approximately 24 hours per week; schedule is consistent week to week and set in coordination with the Finance Manager/Controller, with payroll processing days fixed

- $26.00-$30.00 per hour, commensurate with experience; hourly, non-exempt position

- Primarily on-site at Baker's administrative offices (currently Malvern, PA, transitioning to Norristown, PA in 2026)

Baker Industries is an equal opportunity employer. As a second-chance employer, we welcome applicants of all backgrounds, including those with prior justice system involvement.
