Job Summary:
The Part Time Senior Structural Engineer will work collaboratively to support clients and internal teams within complex multi-discipline engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have a rich history in delivering electrical/mechanical/structural/civil engineering design projects and a keen interest in design, construction, financials, contracts, and schedules. They will also support consulting/assessment services, as needed. The Senior Engineer will execute engineering design for a diverse range of building types facilitating client meetings, partnering closely with other engineering and/or architecture team members, as well as contractors, installers, and utilities. The ideal candidate should have the ability to design new systems or find solutions for existing system upgrades.
This position serves as a California-licensed Structural Engineer in responsible charge of structural engineering projects. This is a part-time, as-needed position (up to 16 hours per week) intended to provide technical oversight, quality assurance/quality control review, engineering consultation, and responsible-charge services for structural engineering projects performed by the Bureau Veritas Architecture & Engineering team and will be responsible for signing and sealing structural engineering documents prepared under their responsible charge in accordance with California laws and regulations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Serve as the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR) and Engineer in Responsible Charge for assigned projects. Review, approve, sign, and seal structural calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and other engineering documents prepared under their supervision and responsible charge.
  2. Provide professional engineering oversight and assume responsibility for the technical accuracy, code compliance, and completeness of structural engineering deliverables issued under their license.
  3. The Senior Structural Engineer will support structural engineering projects involving new construction, tenant improvements, seismic retrofits, structural modifications, and existing building evaluations.
  4. The Senior Structural Engineer will perform structural design and detailing for a variety of structural systems including structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood framing, PT concrete, cold-form metal framing, and shallow/deep foundation systems in accordance with applicable building codes, industry standards, and client-specific requirements. Project may include commercial, educational, industrial, municipal, mixed-use, parking, and public sector facilities.
  5. The Senior Structural Engineer may conduct site investigations, field observations, structural assessments, and engineering evaluations of existing structures to determine structural adequacy, identify deficiencies.
  6. The Senior Structural Engineer will develop and review structural engineering deliverables, including calculations, drawings, specifications, shop drawing submittals, deferred submittals, and engineering reports.
  7. The Senior Structural Engineer will serve as Engineer-of-Record responsible for signed and sealed engineering documents prepared under their responsible charge. Experience with codes and standards including IBC, CBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI, AISC, TMS, and NDS is required.
  8. They will consult on engineering design for a wide range of projects and work with other engineers, architects, project managers, and construction professionals as needed to create and/or modify design parameters.
  9. The Senior Engineer will be required to delegate work to and review design plans and documents prepared by CAD Operators, Designers, Senior Designers, and Engineers.
  10. The Senior Engineer will act as the engineer-of-record (EOR) as a licensed professional engineer to stamp & sign required plans and reports under their responsible charge.
  11. Ensure all completed projects comply with relevant codes, regulations, and quality standards.
  12. Stay current with industry trends, new materials, and innovative design techniques.
  13. Protects operations by keeping company information confidential. Use of professional discretion and judgement is mandatory.
  14. Demonstrates BV's guiding principles in support of the company's strategic goals.
  15. Follows all documented policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Work Instructions applicable to the position and support of BV's quality standards and strategic initiatives.
  16. Maintains safe and clean work area by complying with all procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Required: Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of California. Additional state reciprocity/comity PE licenses preferred.
  • Required: 2+ years' experience in project management including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Required: Proficiency in AutoCAD and creation of engineering construction documents.
  • Required: Familiarity with California projects and codes.
  • Valid driver's license required with no significant motor vehicle report (MVR) points/violations (clean driving record).
  • Employees who incur $2,000 or more per year in company-related travel expenses will be required to obtain a Corporate Credit Card. Employees who incur less than $2,000 per year in company-related travel expenses will be required to have sufficient personal credit to cover their business travel costs.
