Job description

Description Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, cleans all public and staff areas in the Main library building and at Douglass Branch library; washes exterior entrance areas; cleans glass and other surfaces; clears trash from the parking lots and library property; empties trash and recyclables; landscaping, fall/spring clean-up, mowing and trimming, and arranges furniture in public meeting rooms. Responsible for maintaining a clean and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors and staff in library buildings and on library property. Schedule is as follows.

Thursday - Monday: 4am - 9am Open until filled, with first review of applicants on June 29, 2026. Examples of Duties Cleans public and staff restrooms; monitors restroom conditions throughout the day and ensures supplies are adequately stocked Vacuums carpeted floors; cleans and buffs hard surface floors and replaces carpet tiles Dusts and cleans bookshelves, tables, counters, desks, computer workstations, vents, light fixtures, baseboards, glass etc. Empties indoor and outdoor trash receptacles Sets up tables, chairs, sound systems, and other equipment for public meeting rooms, author events, and outdoor events Maintains and monitors entrance area to ensure it remains clean Picks up trash inside the building, parking lot, and from library grounds Clears snow and ice from entryways; applies ice melting chemicals as necessary Observes and reports matters pertaining to library building condition and maintenance Assists with moving library materials, supplies, equipment, and furniture as needed Makes minor repairs including plumbing and electrical Monitor and ensure completion of ongoing Maintenance ticket requests Assists with security functions, such as opening and/or closing the building, assist other staff in challenging customer interactions Assists with training of new staff and of volunteers Provides excellent internal and external customer service Participates in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology and safety training Other duties as assigned Requirements Knowledge of cleaning procedures and janitorial techniques Ability to work independently Ability to work varied schedule including weekend and early morning shifts A strong commitment to public service Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly and efficient manner Good written and oral communication skills Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule Ability to maintain a varied schedule, including day, evening, and weekend rotations Strong problem-solving skills Ability to issue guidance and ensure compliance with the Library's Rules of Conduct and policies Manual dexterity to operate computer and phone equipment Familiarity with workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite Ability to stand and walk for long periods Ability to lift library materials and boxes weighing up to 80 pounds and physical ability for bending, lifting, pushing, hauling, digging, pulling, and stooping Valid driver's license, acceptable driving history, and personal automobile for required job-related transportation Satisfactory pre-employment background check Acceptable Experience and Training High school diploma or GED required Experience performing general custodial or maintenance work preferred Experience performing general mechanical maintenance desirable Experience in minor building and equipment repair and HVAC systems desirable Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
