General Description of Position
Under the direction of the Associate Dean and Program Chair(s), the Adjunct Instructor position involves instructing students in a variety of Biotechnology courses in a campus classroom, lab, online/remote, hybrid, and/or off-campus setting. This position may also be responsible for the maintenance of the lab equipment. This is a part-time, temporary position and is part of a pooled adjunct faculty posting for the 2026-2027 academic year. Hiring is based on program needs.
Essential Functions
Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas
  1. Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned.
  2. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom, online, hybrid, or lab setting that are appropriate to individual student needs and may include, but are not limited to, lectures, small groups, demonstrations, and computer-assisted instruction.

Provide For Student Evaluation and Record-keeping
  1. Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
  2. Assist in gathering and interpreting data for department assessment.

Promote a Culture of Belonging
Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute. Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment. Marginal Functions
  1. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  2. Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of lab equipment.
  3. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.

  5. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Possess current knowledge and experience in the Biotechnology field. This will include the following: concepts and lab skills associated with buffer and solution preparation, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, micropipetting, PCR, aseptic technique, and lab safety. The ability to perform additional skills such as molecular cloning and purification of DNA plasmids, bacterial cell culture, and protein purification would be beneficial.
  2. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication competencies necessary to supervise laboratory activities, working with a diverse student population.
  3. Be able to maintain a lab environment that is conducive to learning, including the ability to maintain proper lab guidelines.
  4. Be able to listen to a student's question or problem, assess the type of help needed, and provide a timely and appropriate solution to the student's problem or question.
  5. Ability to perform routine organizational tasks.
  6. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with students and College staff in all types of working relationships.
  7. Be able to meet the requirement of supervising students during lab times. This may involve standing and walking for periods of up to three hours.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  9. Ability to use basic computer skills.
  10. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  11. The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in the bioscience field (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.) or bachelor's degree in education with secondary endorsement in science,PLUS six (6) graduate hours in a related science field and successful completion of five (5) core microcredentials from BCSI. OR Bachelor's degree in a bioscience-related field (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc) AND two (2) years of industry experience and current experience in training or supervising,PLUS five (5) core microcredentials from BCSI.
  2. Two (2) years of current work experience in a Biotechnology field related to the area of assigned duties in the Biotechnology program.
