Job description

We are seeking Mentors who will report to the the Program Assistant Director or Coordinator for grant, pre-college programs for middle school or high school students in Paterson Public Schools or Passaic Public Schools. Mentors are initially required to make a commitment for one session (Summer 6weeks: July-August; Fall 10 weeks (Oct-Dec) and Spring (Feb-May). Mentors support program logistics, as well as provide individual and group activities to encourage students regarding post-secondary options.
This is a part-time, hourly position.

Examples of Duties:

  • Participate in mentor training provided by grant program.
  • Serve as a role model and provide encourage college/career pursuits.
  • Meet with assigned protégés based upon agreed work schedule.
  • Assist in the development of skills necessary for protégés to succeed both personally and academically.
  • Assist assigned protégés in developing realistic career/academic goals and expectations.
  • Participate in the planning of enrichment activities.
  • Evaluate and document experiences of assigned protégés.
  • Provide resource information to protégés.
  • Assist staff with other program related activities such as virtual and on-site field trips, seminars, administrative tasks, etc.
  • Ability to use virtual platforms.
  • Provide classroom support to instructors and program logistical support
  • Provide lite tutorial assistance as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the program director/coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Must be current college student in good academic standing
  • Knowledge of computer programs and some social media platforms, for example Word, Google, Zoom, etc.
  • Ability to communicate on a verbal as well as written basis with students, staff, parents and others.
  • Ability to work in a team environment coordinating needed student services.
  • Completion of a pre-college program (STEM, Upward Bound, GEAR UP, College Bound or similar program) preferred
  • Interest in high school or middle school students' personal development preferred

The completion of a background check will be required for the selected candidate.

Compensation: Compensation is determined by a variety of criteria, including but not limited to, previous relevant experience, education level, and certifications. The minimum hourly pay for this position is $15.92.
