Job Title: On Call Substitute Teacher for Family Child Care

Job Classification: On Call/Part Time, Non-exempt

Report to: STEP Program Operation Team

STEP (Substitute Teacher Empowerment and Placement) is a non-profit workforce development program that provides affordable substitute teacher staffing for childcare centers and promotes fair wages and professional development for teachers. Job: This position functions as a ‘floater’ providing support as needed. The primary role of this position is to support activities, supervision and needs. The secondary role is to ensure quality food service and sanitation in the center or Family Child Care.

Essential Duties:

I. Primary responsibility is to assist the the center classroom teaching team and/or Family Child Care staff, which includes the following duties:

  • Prepare activities and the learning environment
  • Assist with implementation of curriculum as needed
  • Supervise children at all times
  • Help ensure indoor/outdoor safety
  • Oversee the daily nap routine
  • Communicate with parents when needed
  • Interact with children appropriately
  • Report inappropriate behavior of staff, parents and on-site consultants to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist staff as assigned (e.g. checks and open doors, answer phones, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the staff
  • Arrive on time and be prepared to work in different work environments (private schools, Head Start programs, non-profit childcare centers, Family Child Cares, etc.)
  • Follow site-specific routines, rules, and guidance from the the supervisor
  • Accept feedback and redirection professionally
  • Maintain calm, respectful communication with children, families, and staff
  • Demonstrate flexibility in changing environments, schedules, and expectations
  • Diaper changing is mandatory
  • Successful candidates are patient, dependable, emotionally regulated, and able to work independently in small, home-based child care settings.
  • This role is best suited for individuals who are observant, supportive, and comfortable following established routines and expectations.

Qualifications: STEP is looking for experienced childcare personnel who can attend to the care and education of young children in a high quality setting to foster their school readiness and establish a foundation for success in school and life.

  • Have past experience working with children 0 to 5 years old; and
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with children, families, FCC owners, and STEP staff.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) skills are a plus but not required.
  • 3 or more Child Development/Early Childhood Education units (preferred)

Other Requirements:

  • Annual Physical Exam and TB Clearance
  • Proof of Measles vaccine
  • Proof of TDAP vaccine within the past 10 years
  • Proof of Influenza vaccine within the past 12 months, or you can sign a waiver
  • Criminal Background Clearance
  • Child Abuse Index Clearance
  • Adherence to the Confidentiality Agreement
  • Adherence to the Child Abuse Reporting Mandate
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to change position; to sit, stand, walk, climb or balance; to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; to bend, twist and reach with hands and arms; and to pick up children.
  • Light to moderate lifting (up to approximately 50 lbs) is required, such as lifting a child, chair, table, etc.
  • Adhere to the ECE STEP Code of Conduct and all other internal policies and procedures.
  • Accountable for the health, safety and supervision of all children and families.
