Civil Engineering Interns are usually students or recent graduates working on-site or in engineering firms to gain industry experience. While both roles involve learning and entry-level tasks, the student role emphasizes academic progress, whereas internships focus on practical industry exposure.

Can you work part-time as a civil engineer?

Part-time civil engineering positions are available, especially for students or those gaining experience, often involving flexible hours or internships. However, full licensure typically requires full-time work and completion of a degree, so part-time roles may be limited to entry-level or assistant positions. Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Academic and Operations Coordinator of the Year One Foundation Program, the Engineering Tutor will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions to international university students in engineering-related subjects such as mathematics, physics, statics, dynamics, and introductory programming.
  • Supporting students in developing analytical thinking and structured problem-solving approaches, including breaking down complex problems step by step.
  • Helping students apply theoretical knowledge to practical and real-world engineering contexts.
  • Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide feedback on their academic development.
  • Clarifying course material and providing guidance on assignments, homework, quizzes, and exam preparation using clear and accessible explanations.
  • Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.

  • Strong ability to connect formulas and calculations to underlying principles; and to break down complex engineering concepts into clear, manageable steps using examples, diagrams, or real-world analogies.
  • Prior tutoring, teaching, or laboratory instruction experience, particularly with international students, is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
