Location: San Jose and South Bay
Job Type: Part-Time | In-Person

Yes For Chess is one of the Bay Area's leading after-school enrichment programs, bringing engaging chess instruction to elementary schools through fun, structured, and educational after-school classes.

We're hiring now for our Fall 2026 school programs and are looking for dependable instructors who enjoy working with children and want to make a positive impact in local schools.

Hiring Timeline

We're hiring ahead of the school year so you'll have plenty of time to prepare for success. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

About the Role

We're looking for an instructor who lives in or near the South Bay to teach after-school chess classes at local elementary schools.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking consistent part-time afternoon work. Successful instructors may be considered for hourly pay increases and additional opportunities, such as tournament support and special projects.

Primary Teaching Areas

We're especially interested in candidates who live in or near:

  • San Jose
  • Campbell
  • Santa Clara
  • Sunnyvale
  • Cupertino
  • Milpitas
  • Los Gatos
  • Saratoga

Primary teaching assignments will be throughout the South Bay, including:

  • San Jose
  • Santa Clara
  • Sunnyvale

Reliable transportation is required. A personal vehicle is strongly preferred, as instructors may occasionally need to travel between different school locations.

Schedule
  • Up to 3-4 afternoon per week to start
  • Classes typically begin between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM
  • Most classes run approximately 90 minutes
  • Opportunity to increase hours as additional classes and school assignments become available.
What You'll Do
  • Teach engaging after-school chess classes for elementary students
  • Create a fun, encouraging, and structured classroom environment
  • Build positive relationships with students, school staff, and families
  • Arrive prepared, on time, and ready to lead each class
  • Communicate professionally with the Yes For Chess team
  • Occasionally provide coverage at nearby schools when needed
What We're Looking For

Basic chess knowledge is required. You don't need to be a chess master.

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, punctual, and professional
  • Great with elementary-age children
  • Friendly, patient, and energetic
  • Comfortable leading an elementary classroom independently
  • Organized and communicative
  • Candidates with personal vehicles are strongly preferred, as instructors may occasionally need to travel between different school locations.

Previous teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp, or childcare experience is highly valued. Successful completion of a background check is required before employment.
