General Function
Construction Technician I
The Construction Technician I performs entry-level, multi-trade construction and renovation work in support of small project work across campus. This position is part of an internal construction team responsible for completing renovations, modifications, and installations within existing facilities. Work includes assisting with carpentry, drywall installation and finishing, painting, flooring installation, minor electrical and plumbing modifications, and other related construction activities. Assignments are project-based and focused on improving or modifying spaces rather than performing routine maintenance or service work. The Construction Technician I, works under direct or general supervision and is expected to develop skills across multiple trades while contributing to the successful completion of construction projects.
Construction Technician II
The Construction Technician II performs a wide range of skilled, multi-trade construction and renovation tasks in support of small project work across campus. This position functions as part of an internal construction team responsible for completing interior and exterior renovations, modifications, and installations within existing facilities. Work includes carpentry, drywall installation and finishing, painting, flooring installation, minor electrical and plumbing modifications, and other related construction activities. Assignments are typically project-based and involve building, altering, or improving spaces rather than performing routine maintenance or service work. The Construction Technician II operates with a high degree of independence and craftsmanship, applying practical construction knowledge to complete projects efficiently, safely, and to a professional standard.
Description of Primary Duties
1. Assists in performing construction and renovation work including framing, drywall installation and finishing, painting, flooring installation, and general interior modifications.
2. Supports minor electrical and plumbing modifications as part of project work, including assisting with extensions, relocations, and installations under appropriate supervision.
3. Assists with installation of building components such as doors, hardware, whiteboards, shelving, fixtures, and furnishings.
4. Performs patching, surface preparation, and finish work to support project completion, including sanding, painting, and basic repairs.
5. Assists with concrete work and other structural or site-related tasks associated with small construction projects.
6. Gathers, stages, and organizes materials, tools, and equipment needed for assigned projects.
7. Maintains clean and safe work areas by protecting surrounding spaces, controlling dust and debris, and restoring work sites upon completion.
8. Tracks time and materials on assigned tasks and reports progress to the Construction Supervisor or lead technician.
9. Complies with all safety regulations, environmental requirements, and University policies related to construction work.
10. Provides support for miscellaneous installation and small project requests across campus, including mounting items and assembling components.
11. Focuses on customer needs and customer satisfaction, projects a positive customer service environment for both internal and external customers and promotes and encourages an attitude of exemplary customer service and high integrity to all of the staff within Facilities Management.
12. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, and attending professional development courses, training meetings, and other courses as assigned.
13. Contributes to the overall success of the Campus Construction Team by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Construction Technician I has no direct reports or supervisory duties. Work is typically performed under guidance from more experienced technicians, with increasing independence as skills develop.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Certification from a vocational or technical training program in one or more trades is preferred.
Experience: At least two years of successful experience in construction, renovation, or building trades work is required. Experience may include work as a helper, apprentice, or laborer supporting construction or renovation activities. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered for substitution of experience requirements.
Skills: Basic knowledge of one or more construction trades with willingness to learn multiple trades is required. Ability to use common hand and power tools safely and effectively is required. Ability to perform basic measurements and assist with layout is required. Ability to learn construction methods, materials, and techniques is required. Ability to work as part of a team and follow direction is required. Basic understanding of workplace safety practices is required. Ability to communicate effectively and provide good customer service is required. Computer literacy is required.
Effort: Work requires frequent physical exertion, including lifting and carrying materials and equipment up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance. Duties involve prolonged standing, walking, climbing stairs, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and working from ladders or scaffolding. Requires mobility, manual dexterity, and coordination to safely operate hand and power tools and carpentry equipment. Visual acuity is necessary to inspect, diagnose, and complete repairs and to read technical manuals, building codes, and related documents. Work is performed throughout campus in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to dust, noise, weather conditions, and other construction-related hazards. Position is designated as essential, requiring availability during campus closures and emergency call-backs outside normal work hours. This position is subject to call back outside normal work hours in emergencies.
Other: A valid driver's license is required.
