Job Summary
Performs part-time, on-call entry to intermediate-level technical inspection work, enforcing the Florida Building Code under the general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector. Work is primarily task-oriented and performed in accordance with established codes, policies, and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts routine field inspections of permitted construction for compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.
  • Identifies violations and documents deficiencies: issues correction notices for non-compliance.
  • Applies established provisions of the Florida Building Code and local Ordinances to typical construction scenarios.
  • Coordinates inspections with contractors and other trade inspectors.
  • Investigates complaints and verifies compliance or violations.
  • Escalates complex or unusual code situations to senior inspectors or the Chief Inspector for direction.
  • Enforce safety codes in accordance with City Ordinances and building codes.
  • Maintain professional certification through required continuing education.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
  • Five (5) years of combined construction experience.
  • Two (2) years in High-Velocity Hurricane Zone construction.
  • Two (2) years performing plans examiner or inspections preferred.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

License and Certification
  • Certifiable by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals as outlined in Chapter 1, Section 104 of the Broward County amendments to the Florida Building Code.
  • Certifiable by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board as a Standard Inspector within one year of employment.
  • Ability to acquire FEMA NIMS certification up to level G-400
  • Possession of a valid Class E driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Key Competencies
  • Strong understanding of building construction materials, methods, and construction stages for code compliance.
  • Knowledge of the Florida Building Code, building standards, laws, and ordinances.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints accurately.
  • Familiarity with mapping and basic engineering principles.
  • Ability to navigate various cloud-based software applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to enforce laws, codes, and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills in stressful environments.
  • Capable of leading, delegating, and reviewing the work of others.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records.

Physical Requirements
  • Active position requiring the ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle objects/controls.
  • Physical capabilities include light lifting (up to 10 lbs., occasionally up to 20 lbs.), standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and reaching.
  • May be temporarily exposed to noise, odors, poor weather conditions, and hazardous job sites.
